Boy this one sure took a long time to get sent to me! But it was well worth the wait! 😮💨
This is my first 80sToyShop fig, and I’ve been very keen to review this newer brand’s quality in hand! And ya know what? I’m pretty pleased!
This fig has a really strong design aesthetic that I fell in love with instantly! Thanks of course to the ever impressive PickleBrick (or I guess pickle customs? I keep getting that mixed up) for the constantly lovely designs for well needed DC characters!
I mean just look at this fig! Nice linework! Good integration of Lego elements in new colors! Snazzy custom parts! Fun printed tiles! This fig has it all!
Genuinely! This is everything I could have wanted for a Rorschach fig! I absolutely love the 1x1 Comedian’s Button tile! But 80’s took it another step further to also give us a printed tile of the Walter Kovacs Journal! Complete with coffee rings, and a pencil!
The only downside was having to wait so long for it!
Turns out, a huge part of the delay with this fig came in the form of its accessories. The grapple gun in particular had some production issues with the handle area…
As you can read up there, the piece was planned to be produced in brown, but instead was produced in silver… though oddly enough, the one I got (I’m like 90% sure unless I go and intentionally scrape away paint) is one of the older ones with the painted brown handles… It’s just too dang shiny for me to assume that’s real plastic exposed like that!
Big picture though, I think this piece was maybe a tad over designed for the “Lego Look”. However at the same time, I’m very impressed with what we got here!
Throughout the review of this fig and it's parts, I was continually impressed with the production quality. Really solid stuff! The printwork for the figure in particular is very strong! For one thing, the whites and purples printed on dark plastics are nice and opaque! The alignment on the 360° limbs are also great!
Honestly I’m struggling a little bit here to “review” the negatives along with all the positives! A good problem to have I suppose! 😂
The hat is a fun recolor, for lack of a better term; as of writing this review in late June 2025, the only “official release” colors for this element are Dark Bluish Grey and Teal. To see 80s some how get a hold of an existing piece in a color not public to everyone makes this fig feel all the more special and authentic to something you’d see in a real Lego set!
Seriously! There’s the Lego logo right there! Check it out! 🔍
I think perhaps the biggest weakness with this entire fig, is the Walter Kovacs head.
Why include it, but not a hairpiece? Also the design could have been stronger, yeah? He doesn't even have freckles! To have gotten something more expressive like Jaka’s Punisher would have been PERFECT! But alas, this one is just middle of the road 🤷🏻♂️
Anyway, here's what it looks like with some hair, plus a bit of extra scarf (using an official Lego collar piece)
Another pedantic thing I thought about, was how maybe this fig would’ve been a touch better if he had his purple gloves too? But that’s an easy swap if you have spare hands lying around. Frankly I didn’t even think about it until I busted out the old Christo fig!
Yes I know, I know! Of course I couldn’t complete this review without comparing this new fig to the OG Christo7108 Rorschach! A fig from all the way back in late 2014 / early 2015 (phew I've been collecting figs for a long time now!)
Now say whatever drama you will about Christo like how he lives among the halls of Pad Printing heroes, or that he sits on a pile of money from all the wildly overpriced wooden stuff that he puts out these days… (literally, the man just sold a Sensei Wu “statue” made out of wood, the size of a minifig for over $1k! Seriously, Christo's lost his marbles) But back in my day, his plastic minifigures were humble and easy to buy!
Comparing these two figs is very surreal for me. Particularly in just how ahead of his time Christo was, but also how much the community has evolved and overtaken him (juuuust barely!) I enjoy the homage 80s/Pickle added to this original fig with one of the two Rorschach faces being a near match of Christo’s :)
While I have a special place in my heart for this old fig, the new fig one just might take the cake for me! It’s simply just a better fig, at a better price, with tons more to offer in its accessories!
Don’t @ me Christo aplogists, because I’m RIGHT!
Although... I think I still like Christo’s hat better… 👀
At the end of the day, getting all of this Rorschach stuff from 80s/Pickle for just $70 is really solid! I do hope to collect the 80sToyShop Dr Manhattan one of these days! And they better make some more classic Watchmen figs as well! I’d love to get a Nite-Owl to pair up alongside this fella :)
