The Baxter Building's biggest room! (Patreon)
Content
This build was huge and also not that huge. It was basically a three sided diorama built with plates and a ton of greebly bits to fill in the space and make things look busy, but not distracting (just like how the original cover does)
I wanted to make sure I had room to adjust the angles and lighting easily with all the space. Not to mention some of the finagling with Johnny and Ben to get them both in the shot since a bigfig is about twice the size Ben is on the original cover.
In order to keep Ben tilted backwards, he just held on to some loose bricks out of frame as a counter balance. But Johnny and Spider-Man both used wire for their suspension. In Johnny’s case, he was set up rather traditionally in the same way I shoot and edit most of my flying characters. But with Johnny’s fire trail he was a bit top heavy so instead of using bricks or something to hold the coiled wire in place, I resorted to a random heavy-ish object on my desk to counterbalance him.
And of course Spider-Man was a tricky one, but I figured it out. Originally I made some feeble attempts at just resting him on one of the ledges inside those curved panels, but he wouldn’t stay put and would just keep dropping all the way to the bottom of the build. So the wire work was implemented through a leg to help... but yet again, he kept leaning too far forward since the wire technique is rather loose. So finally in the end he also got a piece of tape stuck to his back so he would stay in place :P
But I think that’s where I’ll have to leave off for this post because a big chunk of this project was the edit! So come back tomorrow! I’ll post the editing video all about how this shot came together in the home stretch :)
