Abnormal Minifigure Kingpin Review! (Patreon)
Content
Here we go again Abnormal! Let’s see what you’re bringing to the table today!
Talk about a fun concept for a custom minifig! It’s a fun midsize, that translates a bit better than their sorta-tiny King Shark from a while back. But… I think that’s about all it has going for it…
That torso is dense and has a bit of weight to it. It’s a real solid piece of plastic, though I say plastic with hesitation. Because… and this is a first for me… the figure smells. Like it’s got an off-gassing paint-like scent to it that hit me as soon as I popped open the tin.
Not only that, but you can see in these photos that it’s an off-white yellowy white sort of color… It all leads me to be a little concerned about the longevity of the fig if you can smell the production plastic and inks and such while it’s still contained within that tiny little bag.
Okay… so the fig is a little yellow and a little smelly... aren’t we all though... so what else does it have going for it?
Since my first Abnormal figure (The Suicide Squad King Shark), my biggest concern for this second figure was the arms. If ya’ll remember that King Shark review, the arms on that fig were stripped and barely swiveled inside the shark torso.
However these arms are loose as a goose! Even the minifigure hands swivel quite easily! In fact there seems to be no discernible limitations in the posing at all which is an improvement!
…if you’d call reaching the bare minimum an improvement.
That head print is great too! I would've loved to have gotten a second head with another expression though… but from what I hear that was exclusive to the black-suit variant that I was unable to get a hold of :(
The little cane is teeeeeeeny tiny! It’s similar in size to the old classic space antenna pieces, and it doesn’t fit in the hand all that well. Unless you plan on really jamming that jem tip into the fig’s hand (which would no doubt strip the part, just like the new-ish official Harry Potter wands)
And finally, the UV printed “posters” (collectors cards?) are also neat, but ultimately useless in builds because of Abnormal’s logo all over them.
It’s a shame too, because I could totally see myself using that red 3x4 skyline poster in a build of Kingpin’s office or something, but all the text at the top and bottom takes away the useability of them. Same with the mugshot. You could easily oversee the collectors number if the Abnormal logo wasn’t behind Kingpin’s head. So a bummer there too I guess….
Last thing to note (and this might be me feeling paranoid) but that yellowish hue was much more apparent on the torso of this fig once I was finished and in the process of cleaning up the review photoshoot.
Like… I’m the type of fella that at one point bought gloves to wear to keep figs clean so I wouldn’t have to spot-clean and edit dust out of my shots, so you know I’m a sanitary dude with my little plastic figurines (probably could have worded that less creepily)… but this fig looks like it’s got a little stain in the center of the torso now doesn't’ it?
I mean like… it totally looks like that right?
Maybe the fumes from the weird smelly synthetic plastic Abnornal used are more susceptible to the smallest of hand oils?
Weird stuff man…
It sounds like I’m really ragging on this fig. It’s great in concept! But I’m the type of person that’s probably a bit too critical of quality when I’m spending $80 for a collectible.
Idk… I’ve just seen better from so many other customizers.
So far I’m riding the fence with Abnormal. They’ve got great ideas with their current stuff and this fig improved some of the quality concerns I had… yet it also added many new ones as well…
