MrJBricks/Abnormal Minifigure's Polka Dot Man! (Patreon)

Well here we are once again talking about an Abnormal Minifig! This time a collab with MrJBricks that’s frankly way better than it has any right being given all the stuff I didn’t like about this fig!

You can tell by the thick line work and cartoony styling that this is most definitely a MrJ focused piece that features custom parts by Abnormal (perhaps even printed by them too?)

The long and short of it however (like always when it comes to Abnormal’s crossover projects) the custom parts are lacking. I mean I can’t bury the lead for too long here. That helmet piece is just disappointing.

The shaping and odd height feels a bit too far up in the back as well as forehead area. The entire piece tends to rest redundantly above the white neck printing, leaving all that fleshy color exposed when you turn the fig around. It makes him look like he’s bald under the helmet.

Wildly enough, when you swap it out for the official part, it really brings the whole fig together! You all know I’ve always been on the side of official Lego parts when there’s not an absolute need for a custom one, and this instance describes my feelings exactly! Just look how weird the custom helmet looks on the official figure!

I feel it’s also worth noting that Abnormal, while advertising this fig on their socials, made a few comments about how UV-Light Reactive Ink was used on this guy. The idea is pretty fun, but the execution falls short. Using a black light on this fig only helps to see more flaws in the production.

The white of the neck print glows the brightest when it’s supposed to be the dots all over the fig. You can even see how badly the helmet is scuffed.

Ya know… it just about meets the weaker standards in quality that Abnormal puts out. Frankly we’ve seen better from MrJBrick's custom elements many times in the past so it’s odd that they’ve partnered with Abnormal on a fig only to have it turn out like this.

Granted it’s not all bad! The gauntlets on are perfect! Nice and shiny! They fit well and do exactly the job they’re set out to do! Give the fig a helmet swap and boom! Perfect fig! (really goes to show you how the design can carry so much of a custom fig)

The design is great! This fig could have easily gone down the wrong pipe of the custom community that strives for “hyper accuracy” when a silly character like this needs only the Lego-Look to get by!

MrJ as always did a great job with this fig and it slots in well with some of their other past Squad figs like Peacemaker, and Harley Quinn!

The only other thing I feel I should mention that falls short from both collaborators on this fig, is the lack of inner leg print! It’s a disappointment sure, but I guess corners had to be cut somewhere…. The polka dots surely took priority because they’re everywhere, and I love it! :)

All in all it’s the one and only custom Polka Dot Man man to be made as of 2023, and it fits in with the collection nicely! So on that front, I’m happy with it!

$88 and a year of waiting on a preorder… that I’m not so happy about that though… but alas, it’s still a fun fig!
