Wow. I laughed. I cried. I don't wanna say much as I don't wanna spoil anything but it was really hard to shake this out after watching.

PHENOMENAL CAST. The acting is chef's kiss 👏🏽

Been a fan of Ji Hoon's acting since Weak Hero Class so when I saw that he did this movie, which is now the HIGHEST grossing movie of all time in South Korea 😱, I knew I needed to watch it. It's currently only available in cinemas but I found a subbed copy 🤭

PLOT:

A young king is dethroned and exiled to a small village in a mountain valley with his court lady. He meets the villagers there, including the village chief. The chief and the village residents look after the young dethroned king.

PS. The subs go a little fast in some areas so I found it helped to skip reading the name parts like [Minister 1] and go straight into the dialogue. But you should be able to adjust quickly like I did.

re-subscribed for this 🥰👏🏻 Jihoon said he lost 15 kg in 2.5 months for this role. He said he basically ate one apple a day and didn’t exercise, because for this character, he wasn’t supposed to lose weight in a “healthy” or attractive way, or build any muscle. The character had essentially lost his appetite, so the weight loss had to reflect that.

1:11:07 The subs were translated verbatim, thus the error. I'm assuming you're referring to 1:09:50-1:10:05? Korean is a high context language so they tend to omit pronouns often, so long as the subject being discussed is clear. In this case, Mae-hwa (the court maid) and Heung-do (village chief) are referring to the former king in their conversation. But the subtitles assume pronouns without understanding the context.

So real for you to cry 😭 it’s so sad!! Jihoon prepared for this role so well- he practically starved himself as he was playing a starving king! He only ate an apple a day for 2 months and lost 15kg 😞 Bless he worked so hard. You should react to the Youngji and Jihoon episode it’s hilarious! And also WannaOne did a reunion variety show (back in 2017 they had a warehouse which was decorated for them so they could play around and relax for periods of times like 24hrs or 12hrs etc and they recreated it) , it’s actually so sweet to see them all so happy and comfortable together! There are 6 episodes on mnet if you want to watch 😋

Thank you for reacting to this movie! It's my 4th time watching it but still cried. Jihoon really solidified his acting prowess with this role. I hope you can also check out his new drama called The Legend of Kitchen Soldier. Jihoon showed a total opposite image compare to what he has showed so far from weak hero and the king's warden. The Legend of Kitchen Soldier is a fantasy military cooking drama, and it's totally hilarious and such a very nice watch. It's a light and easy drama where every episode is very enjoyable.

I will fill you with some history on this movie. King Danjong was dethroned by his uncle at age 14. He was send to exile and lived there for 3 years until his Uncle Suyang decided to kill him. Heungdo ( the caregiver) buried him and gave him a funeral and was a fugitive upon his death. After some hundred years another King gave King Danjong his name as a king and gave Heungdo a honorable title for burying King Dangjong.

that makes sense! an apple a day seems to be a common way for actors (kinda popularized by christian bale). it definitely makes sense for this character especially its a true to life story

Thank u for this!! Rewatching with you! Based on true history,, King Danjong (played by Park Ji-hoon) was the grandson of King Sejong the Great(the Great king of Korea, who created Korean alphabet). He became king as a child, but his uncle took the throne from him and became King Sejo. Danjong was exiled and later died in captivity. His story is one of the most tragic events in Korean history.
