So from what I understand about SM, when they have a specific vision for a comeback or want a certain type of song for a particular group, they hold a songwriting camp specifically targeted toward that artist. They bring in songwriters from Korea and overseas and give them a brief or direction on what they’re looking for. But they also have songwriting camps where there isn't necessarily one specific group in mind from the start. They can collect songs from those camps and later decide which artist or project they fit best. There have actually been cases where a song was initially intended for one SM group but ended up going to another. (example 1: EXO's Ko Ko Bop was originally written for Red Velvet but later on SM decided to give it to EXO example 2: Another example is Haechan's b-side song “Camera Lights.” Haechan said it was originally a demo for Jaehyun, and when he found out Jaehyun wasn't using it, he wanted the song and recorded it for his own album) Of course, A&R team of each group also plays a big role in sourcing and filtering songs and determining which songs fit each artist. So I assume they're also involved in pushing for songs they think would fit a particular group.
