HEY PARTY PEOPLE. (and hello new people! watch the first few mins of the vids for your shoUTOUT !)

I filmed this on Saturday. note to self: don't wish everyone a happy weekend if you're actually gonna end up uploading this on a Tuesday. D'oh.

Anyways, the vid says it all but I'd really like to chat more on here about SONGWRITING as a process and concept, really dive in.. and to give some context for where I'm coming from with all of this I thought I'd start here, with a little insight into my journey as a WRITER OF SONGS. Yes, it's a long vid.. I could talk forever, I'm sorry. But hey, you can save it for when you've got some time, grab a cuppa and tune in.

The next vid I'd like to do in this *mini series* will be less about mE and more of a how-to guide for writing songs! I'll go through a few different approaches to songwriting and hopefully make the whole thing more transparent (and less abstract) for anyone who'd like to try it but maybe isn't sure where to start :) whether these vids are helpful or even just interesting, I hope someone might take something from them.. that would make me very happy.

If anyone has any Qs or even an idea for another video in this sort of realm, fire anything in a comment below! :)

LOVE. AND HAPPY TUESDAY.

oh and here's the first song I wrote on my own, as mentioned in the vid. I'm cringing so hard just copying the link..aHhHhhh.. https://youtu.be/0_2juznPqtU .. ok TIME TO RUN AWAY NOW DON'T SHOW IT TO ANYONE OK

hey orla! i'm one of the newbies woooop :D this is kinda random but there was a video you posted on your instagram a while ago about having your head under the sand (lol) i wondered if there was a full demo for that one anywhere? cos i bloody loved it and am longing to hear the full version!

Trent Clifton

25 minutes is a completely acceptable length for a video. Thanks for sharing. :)

Lance R.

Love these insight-into-the-process videos! How is your management trial run going?

Alex Dowse

If the videos were any shorter I might shed a tear. They're always fun/informative and it's always cool to hear people talk about things at length It's time to play "Alex's Build Up of Random Questions That May or May Not Be Relevant to the Video But Maybe They Are?" (The title might need a work) If Patreon wasn't around, where would the demos you give us go, if anywhere? Have you ever been approached by a songwriter who wrote something by themselves to sing it? (Do you much prefer having your own input because you can feel it? (If that makes sense and oh wow brackets inside brackets. What wizardry is this?) ) Ramble Question 3: Was there a moment when you realised like, wow, this is actually something I can do? I imagine seeing a song of your own on iTunes or elsewhere would be a cool moment, like it's on this place where you go to buy music and oh hey your own song is there too amongst them. This is less of a question, but do you ever listen to a song and imagine how a certain artist you like would cover it? I was listening to Road Less Travelled (song) by Lauren Alaina yesterday and I just tried to imagine how it would sound if you were to cover it. I got intrigued how maybe you could make a country song sound) (And you thought your videos were long)

These are super interesting to me... it's a bit alien as a 'scientific mind' trying to be creative... I still do write songs, but I keep them to myself mostly (except one for my moms birthday that made her shed happy tears lol 😂 and one time I played a backyard 'show') anyway it's so cool hearing all the angles and perspectives I couldn't see as well before! Very cool. Orla podcast (orlacast?) possibly in da future lol (not kidding) ✌️❤️

Andrew Linden Kelsey

So you said at the beginning of the vid to comment where you're from, what kind of music you're into, how you got here, and what-not. Hallo from Warwick, QLD, Australia. Discovered you because of Dodie. Thought you were cool and loved your voice in the vids of you guys singing, but then Reach (S Club cover) really made me intrigued by you, your guitar skilllz, and your voice. <3 Music I like: Kinda weird selection of music I'm into. Used to be super into heavy metal/screamo, Avenged Sevenfold was my fav. Then I went to quite soft, female vocal music such as A Fine Frenzy, and Rae Morris. Then like... Electric Jazz? Kimbra <3 Theeen, I went through a punk-rock phase. Relient K was the best for me. Bastille obsession, Paramore obsession. So, no real specifics.. But theeen I found Orla Gartland. Your music is honestly, the best. Ever. :P

Emily H

oooh what a throwback. That was super interesting to hear about your different 'phases'. As someone who's watched you almost the entire time up to now, imo these new demos totally reflect your years of experience from both cowriting and the bedroom days!

Orla Gartland

OZZIE FRIEND! welcome! <3 omg. your music taste is next level. Makes it an extra honour that you like mine! Aw Andrew you seem like a legend, I hope you like it on here! xxxxx

Christoffer Wisberg

I played 'Steps' for the people living where I worked as a caretaker for elderly once ^^

Christoffer Wisberg

Also - fun insights! It was nice to hear how you've written and some things you've learned on the way :3

Orla Gartland

HEY MEGAN. you legend, waddddaaaappppppp. :) oh yes, I'll definitely whack that up, the demo was produced by a friend so I just wanna wait for her permission but if I get the go ahead I'll def put it up! WELCOME! (and i'm not usually tHIS late replying to comments lol)

Orla Gartland

aw you're a legend for asking Lance. going super well thanks! they introduced me to the producer I've been spending 2/3 days a week with this past month, he's really cool so they're doing all the right things for now. suppose it's hard to judge their performance until we put a release together but they're definitely gonna help things along!

Can you do another video just on co-writing? I have so many questions! (Can you steal other people's ideas later if they don't use them? Do co-writers ever say things not related to a song you are currently writing that give you ideas later? Who gets the credit? How much do you hold back? How do you trust them so quickly? How often did it feel...not genuine from the other person's side? Anyways...I used to write poetry a lot in high school and it flowed so easily. Then I ruined the flow by trying to make it a song. And haven't written much since...Well I write good things when they are about silly topics (My brother and I have a fake band called Barf Taco and I always start great ideas for that. Oh, I did actually write a song for work! hahahahaha! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMLRtSvQg1w&feature=share

I got around to watching this video a little later than planned, BUT WOW am I so glad I finally watched it. So insightful. Having grown up the same age as you & having been around since Green Eyed Monster days (I also unlisted my first original on YT...YIKES 😂), I can pinpoint moments where so much of my growth as a songwriter coincided or was directly influenced by your growth as a songwriter. So inspired by you. I have so much I was to say and reply but don't know what or how I want to say it. I'm very interested in your co-writing experiences. Being stuck in good ol' suburban Ohio (can't wait to graduate and get out of here), there aren't a lot of co-writing opportunities. Sometimes I feel like I've gotten "stuck" in the phase 1 you described. I am the only one who lives and breathes these songs I write and anytime I try to get constructive criticism from writer friends, I don't feel like I'm "tough enough" to handle any criticism. Like I wish I didn't take so much offense when someone doesn't hear something the way I do or like a lyric that I wrote. When you were first starting the co-writing, did you ever struggle with that? The vulnerability of having ideas of yours questioned or challenged? If so, how did you get past that? ALSO, how did you go about teaching yourself the Logic software?? I have the software and a very basic mic/interface/midi keyboard setup and I so badly WANT to experiment writing and producing more (I sometimes feel like a slave to my uke and acoustic guitar-- wanna branch out.) How do you go about writing a song using the software. Do you write it acoustically and then bring it into the software to produce it how you hear it? Or is the software an integral part of your writing of the song? OKAY I THINK THOSE ARE ALL MY QUESTIONS. Thanks for making this video and thanks for being so open about your process. It helps me try to understand my own songwriting process. You're awesome.
