I really want to write a Christmas song.

Maybe for me, maybe for someone else.. maybe to write it simply for it to exist - it just feels like a fun challenge. Not a carol but a festive banger, a modern 'All I Want for Christmas is You'; cheesy, sure.. but with a poppy infectiousness to it.

I've started stitching together some chords & musical ideas but I'm really struggling with LYRICS! What can be said that hasn't been said a thousand times over!? If anyone has any thoughts to share, I'd be so grateful. What the heck can you say about Christmas other than.. "I like you.. at Christmas? I'm a happy person..at Christmas ? CHRISTMAS IS GREAT!?" There's got to be more to it than that.. Talk to me.

Late night musings aside the demo is shaping up beautifully and will be with you on Saturday 🙂

Some brilliant suggestions above. For me its got to start of with the sleigh bells and that phil Spector 'wall of sound' vibe. There's loads of 'christmasey' stories out there, like the ones here: https://americanliterature.com/christmas maybe reading some of those might help with some ideas. Also I cant believe nobody has come up with 'Orla want for Christmas is you' yet (sorry, awful I know) ;-p

almost done now ;) having a "non-gifting pact" with most of my friends and family is really relaxing ;)

Maybe something about weird but wonderful family dynamics, interactions, conversations, arguments, happenings! One of my favourite Christmas song lyrics ever is "Does your granny always tell you that the old songs are the best? Then she's up and rock and rollin' with the rest." Relatable, and captures the lovely quirky side of families. Good luck, looking forward to seeing what you come up with :)

I'd agree with some of the folk above - the lyrics don't necessarily have to be elaborate. I don't know if you've heard Christmas in LA by Vulfpeck? It's fantastic but it's not got a lot of lyrical content. Hope the writing goes well!

Part of my love for Christmas songs is how (in a way) they are all so similar lyrically but you get to put your own spin on it tonally... with that said I love sufjan Stevens Christmas album so much..... anyway Christmas thoughts from the resident Jew... I love Christmas tho, my fav holiday by far. Every year growing up I would go over a close friend’s house and help put Christmas ornaments on the tree 🌲 so great...

That's awesome. Our policy is if you don't have an idea what to get somebody, (even if you do and can't afford it) don't get anything. We don't care. Just show up. It's all about the people. Life is all about the people. But especially during the holidays ... we kinda celebrate it.

Maybe 'tis me, but I can think only of something sad and melancholic, like "what is like to be santa, when nobody wants your presents?"

I’ve always liked, for want of a better word, “alternative” Xmas tunes. I put together a Spotify playlist (below) of all my favourite Xmas tunes. Some are traditional songs but most poke fun at the idea of or things about Xmas. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is now a classic and it’s the type of Xmas tune I’d like to see more of. By its very name it has a dark humour, pokes fun at Xmas traditions but it still retains a certain amount of warmth and Xmas joy. https://open.spotify.com/user/jj5000/playlist/2dnnQ3F73oYSgC8GJZjQmR?si=6gfLSrlK

Set a scene. What does Christmas look like to you? Sound like, smell like. Or write a song that give you the feelings of all the excitement and anxiety...and then it ends after all the excitement is over and you go back to normal life.

I really like No One Would Be Alone On Christmas Eve by Justine Dorsey. It talks about how she would celebrate Christmas for everyone less fortunate than she and it's really sweet:-) One of those christmas songs i would listen to even if it's not even december yet
