my dudes. it's late but i'm wide awake

HOW ARE YA?

I've been battling a bit of a cold for the last week so unfortunately been a little under the weather on my end; some days it's teasing me and I almost think it's gone, then by the afternoon i'm clogged up again. FUN! but apart from that i'm pretty darn swell, made even swell-er (?!) by your gorgeous response to my latest demo 'champ' :) thank you so much! if you missed it simply scroll back to my last post, or if you can't be bothered I've attached it again to this post, for your downloading pleasure.

this song is meant to sound uncomfortable from the get-go - the verse chords go between the E & D in a way that sounded a bit twisted and weird to my ears, which is exactly the scene I wanted to set. this song is about an old friend I'm no longer in touch with, someone who really wound me up.. though unlike the august demo 'over & out' it's set in a different phase of being 'done' with someone where you've past the anger, you're just sort of hanging about, fed up but barely bothered to be bothered by the whole thing. the dude in question thought the world of himself & was certainly in a world of his own.. he certainly wouldn't take on any criticism of himself, sadly the least humble person I've ever met. instead of wasting all my energy becoming frustrated with him I eventually ended up just playing along.. any time he listed his achievements off to me or rang me up just to tell me how well he was doing in his job/relationship/general LIFE I began to just play along. "omg! sounds great."

throughout these tedious and sarcastic conversations with him I noticed myself using words I would nEVER normally use.. words like "pal". lol. maybe it was my subconscious picking words from someone else's vocabulary, reminding me of how false I was being by playing along. hence, I wanted the main lyric to be something I would just never say.. 'champ' just came to me mid-writing.. it sounded so wrong coming out of my mouth, it felt like a word from a weird film set in some American high school or something. perfect.

verse 1 ponders the idea of us both never having crossed paths.. "maybe you had a past life where you lost a bet, maybe I had a past life where we never met". verse 2 yearns for an earlier time, when this lad and I had a lovely friendship.. though it "took me so long to notice when it started to slide". ultimately, despite my nasty sarcasm I did once care for this dude and all he wanted to me, which I think pokes out at a few points.. "look at you! is this what you wanted?".

despite this demo and the last being about fallen friendships, I do promise I have some wonderful friends and I do promise I'm not always such a negative person! ! !

hope you enjoy the tune! as always feedback is MOST welcome, I know the above situation is pretty NICHE but would love to hear if anyone can relate!

2:21 AM here in the Netherlands, and I am wide awake again after seeing a new Patreon post from you. You're a real CHAMP Orla. Btw. LOVE the song!

I heard lemon water is great for colds. Please have enough rest and get well soon! Also, Champ is the real champ tbh. I personally have never had a similar experience before, but it's a super rad tune to bop into! Thanks for this, Orla. Love love love x

I have been glued to this demo! It's what I go to listen to when I pick up my phone. It's super catchy and I love jamming along to it. Lots of Love Libby

Another stunner Orla!!! I've been having a similar experience with a mate who I thought of as one of my closest friends. she was the kind of person to be so fun but then become cold and almost cruel seemingly at the flick of a switch. Took me a while to realise after years of pursuing the friendship that I didn't need to chase so hard after something that kept causing pain and anxiety, so I guess I've reached a point now where I just don't care (kinda sad really) and have replaced my worry with humour about it all. So perhaps I can relate :) love from NZ x

Honesty hour: when I get excited I may be one of those people. Not like you are describing, but one of my bad habits definitely. If I'm excited I usually try my best to make the rest of the world excited about it and in the process some times forget that they may not care or care way less. Luckily, I think I usually recognise it and try to stop it. So certainly it's not about me all the time 😇 Just playing devil's advocate for a second. Usually when I don't relate to lyrics I tend to check if that is because I relate to the other side. And the answer is no, not to that extent. Controversial discussion topic: does this happen more often to men? Any way, great tune! See earlier comments in previous post.

You succeeded on all those counts -- with the sound of kinda blurry, watery tension and then with your chorus you snap out of it and it really shows the contrast between what you see and the veneer of a reaction you're giving him. You know, because it actually takes less energy to smile and feed his illusion than to try to get him to snap out of it - which would be wasted effort anyway. And it's also less effort giving the thumbs up "Champ!" than to give no reaction at all, because otherwise you have to deal with him repeating the efforts to impress and ... you know that takes energy to endure as well. Better just to say "you go, Champ!" and send him on his merry way so you can get back to whatever it was you were doing. Clipping your nails, cleaning the sink... whatever.

This song is so well written and produced, I love how you can turn the weird/twisted atmosphere into the catchy orly (the adjective of Orla, obviously) mood so smoothly without losing the underlying feeling of the sarcasm that you've described so pointedly and translated so wonderfully into music. You're right, it's a niche but I can totally relate. I'm working with a guy and while we're being professional, everything's fine and we're a great team but once he starts to ramble on about his life and how successful and awesome he is, I really can't stand it. It's terrible because I would have ended this relationship a long time ago if we didn't have this productive professional collaboration. I also use unusual words when I talk to him (or rather when he talks to me, my part of the conversation is about 3%), but because of that it feels like I'm constantly working with someone who doesn't really know me because it ISN'T me who congratulates him for his bragging. Your song made me realise that. Thanks so much!
