*tw: assault

hey gorgeous people.

thank you SO much for the beautiful reaction to your february demo, ‘parallel lines’. it really was something to read through your comments and see the connection some of you had with it.. honestly, I sound like a cheeseball but at the end of the day THAT’S WHY I DO THIS TING!

I thought it was about time to shed some light on the lyrics of this song.. (oops, definitely said I’d do this on friday, sorry). this song lyrically hits on something that is pretty difficult to talk about but I think this is the perfect space to do it just that (just a heads up; this post is for sure darker than the usual content on here).

so a couple years ago I was sexually assaulted at a party. bleghghgh. a tale as old as time; drunk boy + drunk girl, drunk girl resists but isn’t taken seriously & stays quiet for a while before having the courage to fight back. he was a friend, someone in music I’d worked with.. so it was a messy & confusing time to say the least. I felt so rubbish for weeks after, totally worthless.. it must have been my fault somehow, etc etc.

I think once the initial shock had passed a second wave of hurt kind me; while i’d been going through it all & reliving the night over and over, he’d lived on as normal, totally un-phased; ‘you carry on, like nothing even happened’. I wanted to focus on the contrast between the two experiences - ‘different lives’ but also highlight how hard it can be to move on when the person is still in your wider circle of friends & people you know - ‘on parallel lines’.

now over 2 years on, writing this song was therapeutic. I wanted to look back on it all & be kind to myself - ‘now I see / that it had nothing to do with me’.

ANYWAY. gross. things are good now, I trust people again, I’m quick to call people out when I notice them making other people uncomfortable. because i’ve been there, I think we all have in some way or another! sending ALL my love out to anyone here who has been hurt or abused or manipulated, physically or mentally. it sucksSSSS.. there’s no two ways about it. but finally speaking about it sure did help me, even in this small way. some day I hope to have the ladyballs to confront this guy & let him know what he put me (and others, no doubt) through.. and maybe he’ll see it all from the other side. ‘next time will you think of the other person?’.

xx

My heart goes out to you! I'm SO glad you had/have music to process what happened and are able to transform it into such a powerful song. I've been there too. Not in that way exactly but literally all of my songs are basically autobiographies and me trying to come to terms with (mostly bad) stuff that happened. Also, I genuinely want to thank you for all the inspiration that you've given me. I feel like you're songs have shaped my Englisch songwriting in a way. Lots of love from Switzerland <3

I did not expect to be the background and meanings of this song to be that dark. I'm horrified that this happened to you. Neither you or anyone else should go through something like that. This happens way too often and most people don't really care because it's "normal". It's important to raise courtesy to that matter, the women's march was a good thing and I hope that the society will change it's mentation. I'm glad you finally found a way to deal with it through your music and this song in particular. Music-wise it's a stunning song. In some way you made something beautiful out of it - even though there's a sore story behind it. I hope for you that you will get the chance to confront the guy.

thank you for sharing! I always benefit from getting to know you better when you explain the meaning behind your songs. I can't speak for everyone, but the song is enhanced for me through new insight.

Rosalind Lee

You are stronger and more powerful than you know. We all are.

Alex Dowse

Oh wow, thank you for sharing this with us. You are so wonderful and I’m glad you made it through. You’re such an inspiration for people.

Nerd Hunter

Wow, that's amazing how you're able to take a bad experience and turn it into something beautiful. It's always so cool to see how much meaning a song has from the artist's perspective.

Lauren Phongphachone

Hopefully I can send as much love to you as I can through this little comment. Know that we all love and support you through anything!

John White

I couldn't put it better than Rosalind did, so I'll just second it. Much love, and even more power to your elbows Orla.

So so so so sorry to hear this ever happened to you (or anyone else in here). I think it's encouraging seeing how strong the movements surrounding issues like this are currently, and while it obviously doesn't mend any harm done, it's an empowering time for people who've felt like they don't have a voice, and you're adding to that! Being a voice for people and highlighting the issue and fighting back in your own creative magical way. It's awful this ever happened and it should never happen to anyone, but you're an absolute megastar turning such a horrific experience into something so creative and inspiring at the same time. Glad you're in a better place now and felt comfortable enough to share the meaning of this. Always here for you gal xxx
