HEY Y’ALL. I’m a little late but wanted to throw the spotlight back on your July demo and give you a lil more background on it!

As an indecisive, easily swayed soul regretting things is just in my nature. For example I’m moving house soon, and despite it being a no brainer (the flat I’m moving to is gorgeous and I’m moving in with my best friend) but as soon as I made the choice my head was like NO NOOOOO NOOOOO ORLAAAAAA !! WHYYOUDOTHIS? It goes beyond reason, it cannot be rationed with. It’s just something my brain loves to do. Forever looking back on situations with rose tinted glasses, you feel me?

This is a song I wrote about an ex (top tip - don’t date a songwriter unless you definitely want a song written about you at some point..!). I broke it off and managed to remain good friends, but every time he spoke about new girls he was seeing I felt all squirmy and odd. NO ORLA. WHAT HAVE YOU DOOOOOOOONE.

I wrote the first verse of this song first, and had it in my mind for a couple weeks before making it into anything longer. I produced a lot of it at home and some at my friend Steph’s studio.. she’s got some awesome synths that we got on there (shoutout to the Juno 106). I wanted the song to feel light and dinky (referencing artists like Julia Michaels) so that the heaviness was coming from the lyrics, not the track. That kind of contrast is something I’m really loving lately.

Hope you enjoyed this! As always stream away on here and download the mp3 for yourself. :)

Lyrics:

how does it feel when your tongue hits her tongue?

does it shake your whole body like a bass drum?

I don’t even wanna hear about last night

I’m just asking to be nice

haven’t seen you in weeks and you seem great

did i make a big mistake?

I don’t know if I can be your friend

pre1:

I know I say im fine

but i’ve been thinking all time

Chorus:

I feel

Regret

every single time i look at you

every other second of the day

I’m counting up my mistakes

And I forget

Why I ran away in the first place

can’t believe the mess I’ve made

I feel regret

Can’t remember why i wanted to

just be 23 and run away

i don’t know if i can be your friend

when i was it was me instead

V2

We’re such a stereotypical romance

Dreamers caught up in their own dance

We went our different ways because we could

I guess we were too good

Does your face light up when she calls you?

does she make you feel happy like i used to?

I don’t know if I can be your friend

(Chorus)

I love this song Orla ! The contrast between the music & the lyrics makes it more sad ! ♥️

I love your songwriting (still. yeah, you've heard this before from me). I think we singer/songwriters are always trying to work stuff out ... usually feelings. And these lead to the best kinds of songs. Partly because we all have similar stuff to work out in our lives. We have, or we are, or we will be going through something lots of people can relate to. "top tip - don’t date a songwriter unless you definitely want a song written about you at some point..!" Yup. And not just people we date. People whom we'd like to give advice to. Constructive or otherwise ;-) I only have one ex-girlfriend song. One for my wife as well. And a couple on little mini-crushes I've had. Mostly trying to sort those feelings out in the life of a married man and put them in their place. "I broke it off and managed to remain good friends, but every time he spoke about new girls he was seeing I felt all squirmy and odd. NO ORLA. WHAT HAVE YOU DOOOOOOOONE." What you're going through here is pretty natural. I remember with a couple of ex's, especially one in particular I'd broken up with -- when I ran into her out of the blue and she told me she was getting married, my first feeling was jealousy and my first thought was "did I make a mistake????" (I didn't. Turned out she did, with that particular guy, but I had no idea at the time). Hey, we're still friends. That was about 30 years ago. And my childhood friend, who I was sure I was going to marry. We wrote back and forth after I went to college. I got to hear about her boyfriends. Oh I didn't like that at all. Difference there was she never considered me her boyfriend, just her close childhood friend who happened to be a boy. We're still very close, too, though we did go through a bit of a cooling period after she got married. Come to think of it, that one didn't work out well for *her*, either. Fortunately after that divorce she took my advice and started dating this guy she wasn't sure of. Now they're married and he treats her like she deserves to be treated. Which makes me happy since she didn't choose me to do that. But I digress, as usual. Good job, once again.

The second verse is exactly La La Land

Amazing as always.. Could you please post the chords when you get a chance?? 😊

MichaelHMusic

If you are playing on guitar, you can put a capo on fret 1 and use the chords: E F# C#m E F# A for verse - then the pre-chorus part is just B - chorus is: A E C#m B, A E B (2nd time just without the last E) - then the little 'Wishing it was me' bit is E F# A twice --> I think thats all the bits for the whole song - hopefully this makes sense, let me know if it doesn't :)

fantastic song, soooooo catchy from the very first verse, love the light sound versus the heavy lyrics

After verse 2, I really want to hear that pre-chorus (or same melody, different lyrics) again!! I love this one.
