HEY. how are u! hope you're good. (I haven't forgotten about the art competition.. it's the next post I promise). something else special for you this Sunday..

so remember my covers-a-thon, like a month ago? I played a bunch of covers in return for donations to NHS charities together. we raised £3500+ and it was a wild & wonderful time.. a triumph and highlight of lockdown life for me. and alongside the covers, I had a lower tier donation price of £5, where the giver could suggest a lyric for an original song I promised to life, with the loose theme of 'life in lockdown'.

I naively thought I might have time to start writing this song during the actual live stream.. but then received about 50 more covers than I anticipated and so had to prioritise them! but FINALLY this weekend I got around to stringing these suggested lyrics together and writing a brand new song with them. it was a fun challenge - here is the resulting song! I'll be sending this out now via email to the folks who donated on JustGiving, but wanted you legends of the secret demo club to have it too.

so here are the final lyrics.. and at the bottom of this post I'll leave the lyrics as suggested by the folks who donated.. see if you can spot where I slotted each one in! (you'll see I often had to change some of the wording to make em work!) :

on my 5th cup of tea by 2pm

oh I’m living my dream life, through my sims

streets are empty, nothing to do

and I’m back here looking, at old pictures of you

I lost my mind in a two-day span

I was crashing through the walls like the cool-aid man

the paths from my door, never tried before

my daily pilgrimage, I never needed them more

CHORUS: (I guess the thing is)

can’t rewind or fast forward

just let it play right through

so I sit in my corner

waiting for something not so blue

stare at the phone screen

if it’s all that we can do,

but it’s not the real thing..

it’s not perfect, it’s not you

too many episodes, start to slouch

Mom said I’ll soon be wide as the couch

I couldn’t work from work, so can’t work from home

so I’m fucked, out of luck, always stuck on the phone

I’ll cry over everything, not alright

can we find past love in this lonesome time?

I’m sick of baking cookies for this family

I’ve eaten too much chocolate, please stop me

like a tiger in a cage, unruly child

my thoughts are loose cereal running wild

(CHORUS)

I miss hugs and laughs and tea with you

I miss holding hands, all the things we do

days feel muted and start to sting

I’m fantasise bout the simple things

my cat’s pretty happy that I’m here more

spends a lot less time now scratching the door

I wonder right now what he’s thinking about?

he looks back at me and opens his mouth

he said I KNOW YOU FEEL LONELY BUT YOU’RE NOT ALONE

AND WE’RE STANDING HERE TOGETHER BY STAYING AT HOME

BUT GO FOR A WALK, MAKE SURE YOU’RE FINE

CAUSE I’M WORRIED THAT YOU’RE GETTING WEIRDER OVER TIME

(CHORUS)

Ahh okay! I never got the email but I can just take it here! My lyric was very simple, ‘crying over everything’ haha

georgia

this is perfect i feel so much of this every day :/ and i’m 100% living through the sims

Maria Cichoszewska

why it made me cry!!! the cat part made me extremely emotional lmao. so cool!

Rosalind Lee

This is wonderful! I can't believe how great this turned out. Well done everyone

Gareth Toerag Rees

It all holds together so well! I was expecting some kind of blank verse tone poem given the variety of things you had to incorporate. How on earth did you turn it into such a coherent piece? Sheer blinking genius, this is 😄.

Jackie S

i loved how this turned out! the lyric suggestions had such a wide range and it's amazing how you were able to put it all together. i loved how you used the cereal lyric with the thoughts :)

Gareth Hughes

Well that’s track 1 on the Lockdown EP sorted. You can close the EP with ‘It’s ok to NOT miss those times’ with the greatest of pleasure! Seriously, what a great song that has ‘I’m going viral’ written all over it.

Eliza Burmistre

I love this! You've done such a good job!

Chris Dooley

Can’t wait for your next tour. Me and at least one of my daughters, maybe two, will be at every UK date!

Marta Esteve

when the cat started talking i felt like i was going insane which is the same exact feeling i got from quarantine, well done!
