HEY GANG! greetings from sunny LA (Los Angeles in Jan is truly as sunny as this ginge could handle). end of the month means one thing baby - it's demo time.

I wrote & recorded 'by a thread' in London before I left. honestly - it's been a heavy month or two for me mentally, so you know what that means; emo songs aplenty. this one might be the king of emo songs - a mission for me to take how I've been feeling and bottle it in a song.

I wrote this with Tom who I made my album with and it felt so good to be back together again, making music & enjoying the flow that comes alongside collaborating w someone who knows me tHAT well. pushing ourselves to explore new sounds w this demo was so fun too - the wonky synths you hear in the verses were made by running the acoustic guitar through tom's modular synths. watching Tom change parameters on his modular is a TRUE JOY to behold - he looks like a mad scientist.

it'd be great to hear what you think of this in a comment below. also - for those of you in the GOLD TIER your Jan live stream & zoom hang will take place THIS SATURDAY the 5TH, from  9.30am PST / 5.30pm GMT. save the date/time if you can make it! excited to play u some new songs I've been writing :)

lyrics:

wish i’d stayed where i was instead

deep in thought

in a single bed

fighting the instinct to call my dad

been praying to something i don’t know what

i don’t even believe in god

but i’m sure he’s a cool guy

we are minutes away from a breakdown

I don’t feel like coming to your house

by a thread

hanging on by a thread

or is it all in my head?

i forget

how to do this

hope is a stranger i once knew

so could i borrow some from you?

hardly noticed it get this bad

we’re all fighting for the sake of fighting for the sake of something we were told that everybody else should probably believe in

we are minutes away from a breakdown

I don’t feel like coming to your house

I keep coming back to this one. It's so specifically relatable... the dynamic between the stillness in the questioning and the motion in the rhythm of the chorus, almost like even the engine is sputtering on any given Monday morning. And the way everything comes to a halt for a second just makes me hold my breath for a second. Wild idea: I wonder how it would sound if you run some vocals through the synth? Or like a vocoder type of sound for some spacey harmonies? I always feel like the sound of space kinda makes me reconsider perspective — it makes me feel small and far away, but my problems as well... Anyway. Sending light to anyone relating to this. And a big heap of gratitude to you Orla.
