hey gang. happy monday!

wanted to share something fun + odd with you today. so for album 1 I was v guarded about the initial 'writing' phase of the album.. I only allowed others in when I had the initial idea for a song or indeed the whole song written and then together we'd move through to the 'recording' phase.. very linear, with clear lines between each stage of the process.

for album 2 I wanted to try something different - so some of the songs have been born from in-the-room jams down at middle farm studios. the initial mood captured as a group, an instrumental track or a sonic world implied from the very start. then I've taken the instrumental stems back to London with me, sat with them, chopped them up, thought about the topline (lyrics + melody! basically the SINGING) and shaped it into something closer to a REAL SONG. (a previous demo 'Little Chaos' was made in this way - one of my faves which defo has a place on album 2).

alongside the winners this process has led to some misses.. lots of jams we recorded that I just couldn't make sense of after. some of them will live as just that forever - wordless jams - but it's been interesting to me how much of an emotion / feeling a song can have even when there are no words! wanted to show you this wordless wonky jam from last August as an example of this - I was never able to quite make sense of this one and melodically/emotionally it felt too far apart from the other album 2 contenders, so I've shelved it for now. but I stumbled across it this morning and wanted to show it to ya!

please enjoy my various mumbles accompanied by the lovely Pete, Tom & Mat on bass/drums/synths. maybe some day it will find a home.. but for now it lives as a wordless, wonky jam

x og x
