Lore-Writer's Blog: Naming Dragons (Patreon)
Content
Hello Patrons,
In today's Lore-Writer's Blog we're going to reveal the names of some of the remaining dragon species.
Naming species takes a lot of time and thought, and while it's not a critical part of development, it is important to name each species so we don't forever call them by their early-development nicknames.
Today we want to reveal 3 of the species names we have officially decided upon and look at the thoughts behind the naming process.
Let's start with the "Ice Wyvern" which is the only Wyvern which does Frost damage so far in development. The Ice Wyvern's special ability is called Hoarfrost which it uses to slow nearby non-ice dragons speed and stamina regen. It's frost breath attack does frost damage and has a chance to freeze its target. With all the use of "frost" we wanted to include that in the name. We thought of Frostbite as a name, and some others, but settled on Frostfel as the official species name of the Ice Wyvern. The word Fel is Latin for Bile, so Frostfel means Frostbile dragon. Fel is also used to describe magic in some games, so it works out. The Frostfel Wyvern will be the counterpart to the Inferno Ravager who will make for quite an equal match.
The next species name we'd like to reveal is the official name for the Hybrid. Being a hybrid, it does not have a species as it's a hybridization of two separate species. So we call it a Dravern Hybrid or Dragon-Wyvern Hybrid. This assumes the sire is a Dragon and the dam is a Wyvern. If it were the other way around we'd call it a Wygon. Other names we've looked at would be a Drakon (Drake-Dragon) a Draake (Dragon-Drake) Wyake (Wyvern-Drake) and a Drakern (Drake-Wyvern). The Dravern Hybrid will be one of the strongest and most sought-after and hard-to-unlock dragons in Day of Dragons.
The next on the list is the Micro Feathered Dragon. Most folks simply call it the Micro, which is not fair to all the other Class-1 Micro's we will add to the game later, so we wanted to give it it's own unique species name. Being an egg eater and egg thief with unique feathers, we settled on the name Feathered Zygovo pronounced Zih-goh-voe. The word "ovo" means Egg and "zyg" means Yoke, not Egg Yoke but to yoke two things together or attach things, which the Feathered Zygovo does when stealing eggs, he yokes his tail to the egg and flies off with it. So if you are nesting, keep your eyes out for Feathered Zygovo's.
We're still working on the names of other species, but are always interested in hearing from our Patron's. What are some name ideas you have for the Bio Dragon, the Ice Behemoth, the Nurse Dragon, and the Fire Behemoth? Let us know in the comments.
We hope you all have a blessed and wonderful holiday season.
Until next time, lore-writer out. :)
