How to Choose A Song for Cover Songs -- カバー曲の選び方 (Patreon)
Content
On Learn Shamisen, we have performed numerous cover songs, but it's important to note that not every song is suitable for Tsugaru Shamisen. Due to the instrument's unique characteristics, there are songs that are easier to play with Shamisen and others that may not be well suited for it. In this post, we would like to share the criteria we consider when selecting cover songs.
Tempo
When you are trying to play various songs on the Tsugaru Shamisen, one crucial factor to check is the tempo of the song. You might be able to imagine easily that overly fast songs can be challenging and difficult to keep up with, but even slow ballads require technical proficiency to master. Since the Shamisen's sound cannot be sustained for long periods, techniques like tremolo or filling in gaps with improvisation are employed to extend the sound. However, these techniques are more advanced and may be challenging for beginners.
We recommend choosing songs with a lively rhythm and fewer melodies that require sustained notes, as they are generally easier to play on the Shamisen!
Musical Scale
Those who are learning on Learn Shamisen may already be familiar with the unique scales used in traditional Japanese folk music, which differ from the commonly known Major and Minor scales in Western music.
For example, Tsubo scale for Tsugaru Jongara Bushi consists of the following notes: [0-(2)-3-4-6-9]. Surprisingly, there are many songs that can be played using this scale!
When playing songs with this scale on the Tsugaru Shamisen, even complicated phrases become more manageable to perform.
The following songs that we have covered on Learn Shamisen fall into this category:
"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen""Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson
Of course, this doesn't mean that songs using different scales cannot be played. If you've been practicing songs that use bright Tsubo (Major scale), we have covered the following song!
With the right arrangement, it's also possible to perform bright Tsubo songs in a Tsugaru Shamisen style. Let’s give it a try!
Compatibility with Shamisen Techniques
For those who aspire to perform a specific song on the Shamisen, it's beneficial to have a rough idea of whether it suits Tataki technique or Hajiki technique, or whether it requires Bachizuke. This will allow you to envision the "Tsugaru Shamisen essence" when covering the song.
Even if a song has complex and impressive melodies, it would be unfortunate if the instrument doesn't come to life.
Choosing songs that allow for creative interpretations that showcase the unique sound of the Tsugaru Shamisen will bring enjoyment to both the performer and the audience.

Learn Shamisen
"God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen"
"Smooth Criminal" by Michael Jackson
“Jingle Bells”
