  • Not important at all. I don't even look a them. They can be bare minimum. 11
  • Not very important. Just the bare bones of a background are fine with me. 54
  • One good background shot is all I need to establish a setting. The rest of the scene can be minimal. 408

There are no wrong answers! I was just curious in reader's relationships with the backgrounds of comics. Not just my comics! Comics that you read in general, from all walks of life.

I think good backgrounds are nice sometimes. It's just an example but Zaush' backgrounds are really pretty and add a nice touch to his comics in some contexts. It may not be necessary every time though, but if the context calls for it, it can be a good added value

I love a good background as they sometimes contain relevant info pertaining to the story. As well, artists tend to leave Easter eggs in them for the enjoyment of their patrons

Is there an option for "It's important because while i don't actively look for it, I immediately notice if it's missing"

Shimaron Greywolf

I look at different comics for different reasons. This one I like because of the characters that I really care about. Others, like AlectorFencer's Yria, I like for the insane amount of detail and the art.

Establishing shots are tricky, especially in places with a variety of backgrounds and layouts like a strip club. One minute you can be in the lobby or entertainment area, the next it can be an office, the next it can be a locker room, etc. I’d say you should find the minimum that works for you or that you like doing. That’s the point of this patreon after all, to support you in what you like doing!

If there’s anything that Bojack Horseman taught me, it’s to examine the background details 😂

So, this really depends on the scene/scenario that is trying to be setup. If they are characters having a kind of mondane chat on the couch, and you establish that they are chillin. It's not as important. But if they are in a hospital, the added background can add tension to a situation. Example: the party when they drinking and playing games, an establishment shot of the room, to get an idea of layout positioning, then kind go to a talkin heads look would be fine. But when Andy and Cooper are running around campus, having shots of campus allows us to feel how far they have moved, where they were hiding, and what is going on. All in all, even if you don't do backgrounds in each frame, you want to make sure the panel still has good competition/framing so it could work as a standalone.

I think I'm with the majority for my vote; A scene to show off the picture you want to paint in your head is a good starting point, aside from that, minimal attention to background is A-Okay! HOWEVER that doesn't mean I don't love combing the background for easter eggs and secrets!

I don't even notice backgrounds most of the time... Except in Lackadaisy. That comic has gorgeous backgrounds. But... please don't try to match that standard. She pumps out like... a page a year.

As long as I A.) know where they are and B.) can track the continuity between panels, I don't really notice the backgrounds tbh. I spend all my time admiring your characters' details!

I'm not that big into high detail background in every panel, but one thing, don't add a detailed background in one panel and then in the panels after show the same background in less detail. I saw in a comic once the artist had made a beautiful table set up in the background in the first panel of the page and then every panel after, even though it was from the same angle and distance, the table was just a brown square with some blurry blobs on top. The table was never the main focus of the panels, it just felt like they gave up after the first panel. I was really disappointed when I saw that.
