Patreon's new charges explained (Patreon)

Hey brahs and bras, wanted to give you my thoughts and explain the situation: 

What is it? Patreon want to stick you with transaction charges instead of the creators.

When is it? In 10 days. No changes right now, we've until 18 Dec to change their mind!

Why the change? To "standardize charges" (a flat fee of 2.9% + 35c) to allow:

The good: fans will be charged whenever they join and whenever a creator makes a paid post, not all together at the start of the month. This 'rolling' payment protects creators and makes it fairer for people joining late in the month. However, this changes nothing with NoggerU, as we're monthly with no charge up front. 

The bad: This means a ton of small charges instead of aggregating it in one lump monthly charge, which means PayPal's about to get a lot richer, at your and my expense. (Patreon are also charging creator-to-creator pledges).

How does this affect OSW and You? (Partners in freedom!) 

I did some quick maths (we usually get 89% of pledges). On average:

At $1: your 38c extra gives us 6c

At $2: your 41c extra gives us 12c

At $5: your 50c extra gives us 30c

At $10: your 64c extra gives us 60c

At $20: your 93c extra gives us $1.20

At $50: your $1.80 extra gives us $3

So you can see at lower pledges you get boned for very little extra, not even accounting for VAT. There's been a massive backlash to this, and Patreon have already softened their stance, so they've until the 18th to change their mind. I think they'll bottle it like EA and keep things as is, so nothing will change. We'll wait and see. Have of read of this fantastic thread why Patreon is doing this. Cunt of the year or what!

What can I (I being you!) do?Contact their help desk and tell them you're against it.(Get Help -> I'm a patron -> My pledge) Enough pressure and they'll abandon the changes :)

BTW if money is tight, consider dropping pledging to us to cover the increased cost of other pledges (or just saving for Christmas!)

TL/DR? If this goes ahead, most of you will be charged an extra 50-64cents to support us. Please contact them to voice your disapproval and we'll get this cancelled!
