Note: OSW update on future episodes coming later this week!
I'm SO happy you guys enjoyed the USS Intrepid show! There was no actual wrestling on it, but contained wrestlers. I'd say it's akin to the "Cooking for the Single Man" segment with Yoko on Smack Em Whack Em...but the entire episode! Talking bollocks for 80 minutes 😂
Some of the PR tour segments are presented out of order (as they appear on the WWE Network video) in order to make our review more cohesive, such as putting radio interviews together, and signing events together. Sturgis is the turning point (where we start winding down the tour) - the final signing, house show (a more familiar sight) and travelling with his Rose Buds/Todd Pettingill on the way to the arena for SummerSlam.
Four bits I cut out in the final edit:V1 cuts a promo on what Luger should've said (as the next Hulk Hogan) but it hurt the pacing overall. Same with when Lex complained to the hotel desk, which was interesting but not that funny. During the whacky DJ conversation, OOC asked what's the opposite of a straight man and I asked 'the bender?', and we both immediately said it should be cut. Even though the joke is a play on words rather than a slur, it was a bit dodgy. I considered asking my gay friends if that'd be ok, but if i'm going to that lengths...it's not worth it. Lastly, I made a reference to the finish of Marine 6 (containing a huge spoiler) and I thought best not to include it. When I get to compiling the deleted scenes you'll be able to hear 'em! Most of the cuts were just tightening conversations to get to the punchline quicker.
Tons of British/Irish references in this episode (which I always love)
• Shell tracksuits were all the rage up until the mid-to-late 90s. (We spliced in Harry Enfield's Scousers at 16:45, then The Chuckle Brothers)• "Moore St." - in Dublin City, renowned for having old ladies shill their wares (fruit, chocolates, random clothes) at temporary stalls. (Hence V1 calling out "5 for 50!")• Bob Backlund looking like Steve Staunton: former Ireland football manager & defender (as well as Villa and Liverpool). As an Ireland manager he wasn't great, winning 1/3 of his games and lasting less than 2 years. I LOVE OOC's impression of him. I'm the gaffer....I'm the boss! • The Lex Express allegedly burned down: Iowa...that's Tallaght, right? (suburb of dublin stereotyped as a bit rough)• "An Ireland top from Carrolls" - a famous Irish merch tourist store littered around Dublin.• "Does exactly what it says on the tin" was coined by Ronseal woodstain manufacturer as their slogan, which is a very common phrase in UK and Ireland.
That IS ECW's Francine at 46:35! How she still became a wrestler despite meeting Lex is unknown... Here's her confirming it:
Thanks @Yom_tube and @ECWDivaFrancine! That was at the WM the album release party :)
Simon Bohm on Facebook writes in with some knowledgebombs from STW Ep3:
• It was 107°F (ca. 42°C) on 4th July, 1993 in New York. The ring had been sitting in the sun all day, so Yoko burned his feet on the hot canvas once he took his flip flops off. He went to get his flip flops again but Fuji kicked them off the apron as a rib.
• Lex didn't go 45 days on the bus. Apparently, within the first week (!), Luger pulled out (fart noise). From there, he just took flights to the next stop, where the bus would pick him up from the airport to the event and then back to the hotel, with some filming of bus footage in between.Malcolm Daniel adds:Funny story from Luger’s autobiography. He and Yoko successfully rehearsed the bodyslam in the week prior to the S&S event, but Luger was wearing gym shoes then. He felt like he was on ice skates in those cowboy boots and whispered to Yoko as they faced off in the ring that he didn’t think he could do the slam. Yoko whispered back that it would be fine, and it was, but Luger was seriously worried that he would end up flattened. Also, the helicopter that brought him to the carrier took off before he could buckle his seatbelt, so Luger simply held on to the seat as hard as he could.
OOC stuff:• He's reminded of Randy Newman's approach to songwriting for "I'll be Your Hero" (singing about what he sees) it's a wonderful Family Guy S2 reference
There's a sneaky FG reference later when Lois is running for Mayor and knows how to win a crowd over: 9...[crowd perk up]...11! [crowd cheer]
• OOC getting on Lex's case immediately is one of my favourite things ever. During the "brother's signing" he's like:Athletes lose sight of places like this - "what do you mean, SHITHOLES like this?"We forget about you people - "yeah -- YOU PEOPLE!"
• OOC name-drops the No 16 bus into town (€2.15 please) because it's the most common bus he saw around dublin. During KOTR '93 he notes a 1.4L Volkswagen Polo because it's the smallest car he could think of with a diesel engine.
• Included 2 songs from the Song Contest video, Goose Hudson's The Right Stuff and Benson Makes Music's Biddling in the 80s
Watch the OSW Song Contest video here! YouTube.com/watch?v=9Oa-HQwd3hc
• "on the toilet, on the moon! Jesus Fritz"Refers to shit audio quality (which we had for the first 10 episodes; sounded like we were radio'ing in from the Moon). Brian Fritz did a couple of episodes of Between the Ropes by himself (with a drop in quality, it's usually excellent) where we joked he must've done it from the bathroom.
• Desert Bus is an indirect shoutout to @Graham_LRR & @alexsteacy, during their 12th Annual Desert Bus for Hope, they played What Bar! I just couldn't think of their names off-hand but here's a clip!Pretty incredible, they've raised over $730,000 in 2018! https://desertbus.org/Quickfire bits:• We've been making a lot of allusions to future episodes in this one, like Macho/Crush at WrestleMania X...• Thor's Hammer - Mjolnir - me-yoll-neer :(• V1's "most 90s rap ever" is something he brings up all the time, insulting the Beastie Boys (because I'm a fan) Well, now, don't you tell me to SMILE! ohh yeah....• 1.14.17 V1 tells us about twitch, then there's some silence, then chuckling. I was doing the 'finger in the hole' sex hand-sign to try put him off!
• The OSW create-a-wrestlers in the aftermath segment were made by @NickBreakerNCO who is just a jedi master at 2K19 CAWS! I'll post out when they'll be made available!
And finally.....some attentive fans noted I said SummerSlam '93 was episode 79 (although Lex Express was ep 77) - yes! Ep 78 will be a brucie bonus! But you'll have to wait until this week's update to get the full low-down on the next couple of months.
Alrighty! So hope you enjoyed that quick look into episode 77 :)Love Jay 💚p.s. We're taking NOMINATIONS for the 2019 Golden Noggers in this thread if ya wanna give it a goosie, before voting begins next week!
