It's taken nearly four years, but it's finally here: part two of Square-Enix's ambitious trilogy of Final Fantasy VII remakes. And guess what? It's HUGE! While Remake proved the viability of a modern Final Fantasy VII reimagining, Rebirth absolutely blows the doors off with an open-world take on this classic RPG. But does this chunk of the original game's disc one make a smooth transition into a 100-hour journey? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Will Hughes, and Henry Gilbert as the crew discusses the remake that's now taken up a significant portion of their lives.

Love that this dropped the day after I beat the game. After 120+ hours my biggest beefs are the pacing and the ambiguity of certain mechanics/goals. (I still don't understand what triggers the summon meter or different limit break levels.) Cait Sith is easily the worst as without the moogle he's useless and so you always need to waste 1 ATB just for that. Also, I couldn't disagree with Henry more about the spaceship mini-game. Linking your movement and aiming is horrible. It isn't clear where the auto lock-on zone is, which causes shots to frequently miss. How dare you compare it to StarFox!

I'm thoroughly enjoying both Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth. Playing these games is an emotional experience, especially when I think about myself back in 1997, experiencing the original. It’s 2024 now, and these games bring those memories full circle. However, I find that the sheer volume and the challenges of the minigames occasionally pull me out of the immersive experience, despite the game’s stunning visuals and faithful recreation of the original. Given Square-Enix's struggles to maintain popularity in their newer titles, with games from Final Fantasy XIII onwards lacking the character and charm that defined earlier entries (IMO), it raises a question: Could Square-Enix create something as impactful as Remake or Rebirth if it were a brand new game and not an adaptation of a beloved classic? This is something I ponder, considering their recent track record with completely new titles.

Hey. I'm that weirdo who would've played this game without playing Remake, if only it were on the PC. The hype around it when it came out got to me in a way that it didn't for Remake

"What is this game!?" Was the exact reponse I got from my wife playing Yakuza 0, funny enough lol Every time she walked in it was slot cars, or hostess clubs, etc

I really enjoyed this episode and it made me try Remake again, as I bounced off it the first time I played. I’m about halfway through now and I don’t think I can finish because I just don’t care about the story or mechanics. I didn’t play the original because I had a N64 so the lack of nostalgia may be a factor. But I’m glad both Remake and Rebirth exist and I can enjoy them vicariously through your podcast even if they’re not my cup of tea.

Having finally finished this game 8 MONTHS after I got it…I loved every second of this game. I did eventually stop with the side stuff because I crossed the 100 hour mark but I absolutely loved how they fleshed everything out and I can’t wait to see how they do the big BIG stuff in the final plot with the story. It’s insane and I want the rest!!
