Good Giygas, EarthBound is 30 years old!? Yes, and because we gave this cult SNES RPG the standard Retronauts treatment nearly a decade ago, this time around, we'll be taking a slightly different approach. To celebrate three decades of EarthBound greatness, on this follow-up episode we're digging into the fandom behind the game, and the communities that rose in the wake of its unceremonious 1995 launch. So this week, join Bob Mackey, Reid Young, Charlie Verdin, and Everdraed (all of Fangamer) as the crew looks back on the dusty message boards of the past and the modest empires that grew from them. You'll never look at a fuzzy pickle the same way again!

Funny thing, i just beat Earthbound for the first time over the weekend

Earthbound is one of my favorite games of all time but it's been a long time (2001 was the last time i beat it think) since i put a significant amount of time into it. I did pick it up each time it came to virtual console. Maybe I will finally replay it on NSO in the near future. On another note, got rid of the box back in the day sadly but the cartridge and guide are still in my parent's basement. Should dig them out some time.

I still have my Fangamer Sharks shirt from the unlicenced days. I was wearing it to the skatepark within the past few months and someone else there was like, "Is that from Earthbound?!?" which was a very cool experience.

"EarthBound-Inspired Indie Games About Depression", like Omori, is one of my favorite genres, so I'm looking forward to listening to this.

The part about the game continuing to inspire young people reminded me that my own daughter has a friend who goes by Ness because of this game.

Just out on a walk listening to this and Bob saying it's not meant to be a plug for fangamer as I'm wearing my old fangamer Zelda shirt, old fangamer Zelda hoodie and fangamer Megaman hat. While I can't comment on Earthbound much. I've played it and finished but in a country where it never came out in I dont have the nostalgia for it others do. I am glad for it just for giving me 90% of my wardrobe thanks to it helping birth Fangamer.

This is Stuart’s opportunity to play Inugami Korone’s cover of Pollyanna during This Month in Retronauts.

Bloody beaut episode though definitely angled towards those whi were online between 1995 and 2005! Will anyone be making a history of a fan Facebook/discord/Reddit group in 20 years time? I think not. As much as great communities and discussions can happen in those places they certainly don't hold a candle to the web communities of yore like Starmen or Zelda Universe. Words can't describe how wonderful it is that Retronauts is able to chat to some of the creators of these things and preserve a bit of that history, tangential to retro games themselves.

I forgot to add - OCRemix episode featuring DJ Pretzel discussing the game music fan community when?
