Jeremy: Here with episode 700, we complete the journey that began with episode 666: talking about the weird relationship between games and Christianity. We began by talking about how religion blamed video games for turning kids evil, then moved along to the way Christianity's history in Japan shaped the unique way that Japanese games tend to present the religion and its iconography. Here, we tackle the most prosaic aspect of the topic—namely, old games about Christianity. We hoped to cover the entire span of the history of games about the Bible, but you know how Retronauts does this day... we didn't quite hit everything. But we got the old-school stuff, no problem!

Now, the material we tackled here has been covered pretty extensively by others in the form of drive-by punchlines. Ha ha! Aren't these games bad and silly! And, well, they are. But rather than just laugh at them, I've called in some ringers to give them a more measured analysis. We talk about how these games are mostly bad, yes, but we also look at how well they actually represent the material that inspired them. Some of them are surprisingly faithful (in a very literal sense!), while others are, uh, not. Join your former church kid host (that's me), Bible pros Benito Cereno and Jared Petty, informed skeptic Chris Sims, and alternate perspective provider Diamond Feit as we savor the fruits of the tree of knowledge... video game history knowledge.

Anyway, I think this wraps it up for my little series on religious video games. There are certainly other forms of faith that appear in games, but nothing I can speak to from an authentic, personally lived point of view. So I leave those topics to others. My vow to you: going forward, I'mma be all secular, all the time.

Before I finished reading the first paragraph I thought "he's gonna put in Jesus He Knows Me," isn't he? AND I WAS RIGHT

Had to listen to this one in headphones so the people around me wouldn't ask me what the *hell* I was listening to between segments.

I was weirdly aware of Nintendo's S&P and totally sold on the company line on unlicensed games, and so I was horrified to learn that the Christian bookstore had ILLEGAL NES games. A couple random notes: 1) my memory is that Noah's Ark 3D isn't just built on the Wolf3D engine but the Wolf3D maps too, which is even funnier. 2) I have super fond memories of singing "I Sing A Song of the Saints of God" aka "title theme from SPIRITUAL WARFARE" every year on All Saints' Day.

Rarely went to Christian book stores as a Catholic instead of an Evangelical (went to St Jude shops a bunch for stuff when I was going through my first communion in 92 or 93) so i only saw them in the wild a few times. That was peak Wisdom Tree era and thankfully my parents were fine with most games so they didn't inflict them on me when we saw them on sale at those stores. I also appreciate the music choices. Was always fond of Mary Did You Know? though it was Natalie Cole when it was a staple on Christmas music radio in the 00s.

I was fascinated by the talk of Jesus rarely being a playable character in games and it reminded me of a recent story. EA Sports tried to put Jesus in the latest NHL game. They had him programmed and everything ready to go but the testers kept running into a game breaking bug. Every time Jesus got on the ice he got nailed to the boards.

This was my favorite episode in a while. It hit all the buttons: funny, informative, and you name-dropped me.

You have outdone yourselves. Entertaining Informative Fun Engaging conversation among an intelligent group of “experts” ;-) This is everything I love about Retronauts.

I am getting caught up on episodes and I think this might be my favorite episode ever. Wasn’t “dur hur Bible games bad” like seemingly everyone else that has done this topic. It was respectful of the subject matter while also poking fun where rightfully necessary. I laughed out loud so many times listening. Really great episode.
