Stuart: Good evening, Nauties. Please forgive me if this description seems a little more fractured than usual, I have just returned from a big weekend and I am absolutely cream crackered. Nonetheless, exhaustion shall not prevent me from letting you know that the latest episode of Retronauts is about Sonic the Hedgehog fan games, a vast subgenre that came to encompass so much material that I had to call an audible and change the finish, making it a two-parter in order to ensure that the more recent material got enough time in the sun.

I was joined by returning guest Lewis Clark (SEGADriven) and first-time caller Ryan Langley/Rlan (Sonic Fangames HQ) to discuss the history and ridiculous passion that has gone into the cultivation of the Sonic fangame scene. We cover the formative years of the fledgling community up through to the enormous online expo SAGE (Sonic Amateur Game Expo) which has grown beyond its initial remit into something of an eclectic showcase of various shades of indie game development.

Of course, there comes a time when the fangames community become the games community, with the likes of Christian Whitehead going from bedroom coder to Sonic Mania headliner – but that’s all covered in part two, which will be along for your entertainment soon enough.

And now – I sleep the sleep of the dead. Goodnight, Nauties.

Sonic fan games! Finally we can address Sonic the Hedgehog 4

I think the kissing game should be covered again, even if it was before. It deserves its own episode, perhaps.

Just like Stu I also very much enjoyed Spark the Electric Jester, never completed it because it felt like it went on forever, and haven't touched the 3D entries at all. The creator could've split the game in half and doubled his money. Was it just too much of a good thing? I'll have to give it another attempt.

Big fan of Stuart and his classic jokes

This was is so gosh darn good! Stuart captures that weird period of PC Retro gaming so well, and through the lens of Sonic the Hedgehog to boot!

All the music this episode has been fantastic. GG!

Why Sega hasn’t made a Sonic creator like Super Mario Maker? Seems like the fan community could do amazing things with that and lower the barrier to entry all while Sega makes a killing.

Thanks to this episode, my friend started searching around online for the Sonic games he made as a kid and found a YouTube video that featured them and found out that they're still preserved and playable!

Such a fun episode! I'm actually part of the GB Studio community (GB Studio is an open source program for making Gameboy and Gameboy Color games) and it really feels like Sonic the Hedgehog is everyone's WHITE WHALE. Seriously, every few months someone begins a futile attempt to bring blast processing to the Gameboy (basically a graphing calculator on steroids). It's fun to watch the level of creativity people put into these projects and how close they get to replicating Sonic on the Game Gear. But alas, those damn loop da loops are just too much and most projects never get past the demo phase. Maybe someday someone will Crack the code... Until then we'll have to settle for a damn good remake of Super Mario Bros with redrawn graphics and a plethora of original oddities.
