Steven Spielberg... gamer? It's true! While the 78-year-old auteur has kept plenty busy directing more than 30 movies over the past half-century, every once in a great while, he extends his magic touch to the world of video games. On this episode of Retronauts, join host Bob Mackey and guests Ty Schalter and Aidan Moher (of the FunFactor Podcast) as the crew looks at the handful of times the great bearded, baseball-capped director has stooped to our level.

Bob, you've been to the Gameworks in Seattle at least once. That first PAX West after IGN bought 1UP, there was a 1UP Meetup within the IGN meetup inside Gameworks and like 4 of us ignored the IGN part to hang out with you Marty, Jose and Jeremy

I used to go to the Gameworks in Seattle every time I went up for PAX or Sakuracon but both of them have free-play arcades now and the one at Sakuracon blows away anything Gameworks even has so I never go anymore. Maybe this weekend at PAX I'll give it another go!

I didn't really play the rest of the series, but the original Medal of Honor was really unique at the time. It had a sense of respect and reverence that carried over to earlier entries in similar series like Call of Duty and Battlefield. It's sad that corporate greed and Fortnitification has run rampant in the genre. I wonder how gamers that are actually veterans feel about it all.

This was such a great episode! It makes me wonder what it would be like if more high caliber filmmakers got more involved with games. Del Toro keeps teasing us with Kojima collaborations. I can only imagine the bombastic fever dream we'd get from someone like Michael Bay. Or a Tenet-style time bending experience from Chris Nolan. So much of filmmaking is about communicating with the audience and creating an experience for them. Maybe technology has gotten to the point where those skills can be meaningfully translated into an interactive experience.

Went to the Gameworks in Philadelphia a couple times in the early 00s as it was next to a movie theater i sometimes went to. By the time I went there more regularly it was gone. Sad I didn't try the Seattle one went i went to Sakura-con in 2018.

Wow. This episode was informative to say the least. I had no clue Spielberg was involved in so many video games.

This was wonderful and I had no idea Spielberg was so involved with Gameworks until listening to this! I went to the one in Miami and there was one in Newport I used to go to for years before it went belly up! Also if I ever get time, I need to knock out Great Circle, I’ve heard nothing but great things and I’d like something a little better than Greatest Adventures on SNES…which I bought during the Wii Virtual Console days! How did they mess up whipping when Castlevania existed? Also the gun is worse than a pea shooter except against the sword dude from Raiders which is funny but also come on!

Late comment but as a kid I went to the Gameworks in Ontario , CA a few times and I have very vague memories of seeing people play Vertical Reality and the 8 player Daytona set up , but I never tried playing them because one they were always more pricey experiences and 2 even if I had the money I was always intimidated by them because I thought those were for like teens and adults.
