Stuart: Raindrops on kittens and whispers on rainbows, unicorn piss and some Biscoff-based gateaus… wait, that isn’t how it goes. Sorry. But it does have to do, to some extent, with the subject of this here gosh-tootin’ eppersode o’ that thar Retra’nauts podcast. For you see, these are a few of my favourite things; shiny, shiny things. And that’s what me and one of my favourite things, Dave Bulmer, have come to your ears to discuss this day. Or tomorrow. Or whenever you listen to this, might be in 2045 for all I know. I assume all this (gestures to world events) will be sorted out by then, right? Right…?

Sigh. Never mind. Shiny things, eh? The things you collect or otherwise observe in those crazy computer tapes. Yer Jiggys. Yer Chaos Emeralds. You get it. Shimmering collectables. The sights they flaunt, the glorious sounds they make, the experience of grabbing the buggers. That seems like a fun subject for a chinwag, non? So Dave and myself got stuck into those yummy, yummy pick-ups for your listening appreciation. Still, we couldn’t possibly cover all the bases, so if you know of a particular collectable that brings you joy, please by all means leave a comment explaining what we missed and how stupid we are for having done so. Much appreciated. Thanks. Perhaps they will be read out on This Month In Retronauts and openly mocked by me. The potential is there.

This is another backlogged episode from me – as I’ve explained, I went through a period of recording entirely too many podcasts, but it turns out it’s very useful to have these episodes in the tank. If any of my sick references are at all dated, it’s because of that, so please forgive me. Or make me earn your forgiveness, to wit I will raise every mote of strength in my mind and body and show you my true power. Nah, I’m joking. I don’t have any true power. All I can do is talk about stuff and post wibbling introductions to the recordings of me talking about said stuff. That is what this. You are, at present, enduring it. But I bring fabulous news! For you see, the blog is almost over. Okay, now it’s over.

My Patreon notification said “Collecting Shi…” and I figured this would be about my game collection

Trick the tm because it's Patrick the *redacted* Anyway Stuart's issue with Spyro's 2 and 3 is my main issue with Banjo Tooie. It was nice to be able to complete everything in one go in the original without needing Bottles' later moves. The interconnected nature was nice I guess but should have counted for the later levels not the earlier.

Stu, when you mention music notes being collectibles in something prior to Banjo-Kazooie, you might be thinking of the Milon series.

You should have called this episode "Hidden Gems", just to create more confusion (yes, I know they're not all gems, but still).

Frankie's Cauldron

Thank you for mentioning that about Richard Ayoade, I had no idea! I dropped John Mulaney for similar reasons.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

This episode contains the utterance of the word "diamond" approximately three thousand times but it does not feature Diamond 😡

Julian

I never played DK64 and so didn’t realize that “Oh, Banana!” predated Bananza.

Craig

There’s only one use for a banana. Placed securely in a cars exhaust pipe by either Judge Reinhold or Axel Foley

Finally, someone validates my hatred of Spyro 2. Just let me collect all the gems at once. My brain can’t handle leaving the level without them all.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

No real discussion of Zelda here? Playing OoT as an eleven year old those shiny jingly rupee pickups are tasty AF, the way they appear with a little bounce, the ringing pickup sound and flicker before they disappear. Then the rare bigger ones with bespoke models for the YOU GOT animation.

Shrunken Shrine

Let's talk about Wario Land 4 being the pinnacle of weird Nintendo, because you're absolutely right. The collectible CDs are the hardest collectibles in the game, don't unlock anything else, and simply give you deeply strange songs with bizarre names that get extremely creative with the GBA soundfont. They are my favourite collectibles of all time. Once WarioWare left the GBA, Nintendo seemed reticent to ever get quite that anarchically bizarre ever again. Even modern WarioWare seems oddly sterile in its 'wackiness', now.

I like the sound the Koins make when you collect them in the Maximo games.

Multiplayer Dungeon

Weeping in the car over Gipp's terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day and his sudden turn around. Absolutely relatable, and I'm glad he's found a niche to exist in comfortably. We love Gipp. That said, aren't soda pops designed to look like jewels anyway? I've always thought so. Down to the artifacts existing inside of the fluid. Down to the translucence of cola when you hold it to the light. Down to the general shape of the bottles and the slightly different cut of each flavour. Just beautiful things, aren't they?
