Nadia: "Say the LINE, Zero!" This week on Retronauts, Nadia gets equipped with Jeremy Parish, Victor Hunter, and Stuart Gipp. The topic is Mega Man X4, a great 1997 2D platformer and one of the best entries in the long-lived Mega Man universe. How does one determine the "best" entry in a series with a thousand offspring birthed and nursed by Capcom? With a thorough evaluation of X4's graphics, soundtrack, anime cutscenes, and Mavericks like SPLIT! MUSHROOM! This episode is rated E for everyone — all that red stuff coming out of the robots' wounds is oil. Firetruck-red oil.

Nicholas Picholas needs to be on an episode just about Video & Arcade Top 10. A full on Retronauts Canuck episode. Retronucks?

Of the games in the series I’ve played this is my second favorite behind the original X…playing as Zero was rad but I do agree that you gotta have some shooting in these games, otherwise I feel like I’m playing Mega Man Ninja Gaiden! Also, I didn’t get close to beating this game until I got the X Legacy Collection and I admittedly shifted the difficulty down because that final fight against Sigma, as mentioned in the pod, is so freaking difficult! And you can’t do the “stack up on E tanks” strategy like in the OG series so you really have to be on it! Anyway, great pod as always and I’m so happy somebody brought up (I think it was Parish?) Mega Man 8 during this pod because I hear “JUMP JUMP SLIDE SLIDE” in my nightmares and I’m convinced it’s impossible to beat that level unless you’re a savant of some kind. Yet another one I rented as a kid but didn’t try to dig into until Legacy Collection 2…then I stopped for my own health!

Being a huge fan of both the NES games and the X series, I actually bounced off this game pretty hard. I didn't own a playstation at the time, so I had to make do with the PC port back then. My PC gamepad wasn't really up to the task of playing an action platformer of X4's difficulty. That experience, combined with the changed visual style, lackluster music and level design, made that I fell out of love with the series until Megaman 9. After listening to this episode, I went back and played X4 again for the first time in nearly 30 years on the Switch. I found that there's actually a lot to love here, even if the presentation and level design to me don't seem to be on the same level as the SNES trilogy (yes, that includes X3). Judging the game on it's own merits, it's a good 2D action platformer in a time when such games were becoming a rarety, and being able to play the entire game as Zero is pretty awesome.
