Welcome to Episode 1 of a New Era wherein Diamond Feit and Stuart Gipp are not mere internet acquaintances but IRL hangout-pals. Yes, when we were both in town for Long Island Retro Gaming Expo earlier this month, the two of us spent entire days (well, 1.5) together patrolling the city of New York for legendary food and legendary sports entertainment.

So please tune in to enjoy tales of our American hijinks, what we did/saw at LI Retro, and the usual roundup of news, releases, and of course your comments. Specific items mentioned in this episode include:

LI Retro was such a blast. Getting to see and play a Sharp X68000 was my born again experience. All the nauts panels were great fun. Go Yankees

The name of the UFO 50 imaginary game company whose name escaped you, Stu, is...UFO Soft.

QotM: its a venue I went to a video game event before but I hope they have something better this time. There is a museum called the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Its primarily a kids targeted science museum but has some neat exhibits for older audiences like the walk through heart or a full sized 19th century train. A few years back they did a video game history exhibit...limited by only featuring Sega, Namco and Midway (via Warner). They did have indie studios as part of the future of the industry section. I would like to see an event there that featured the breadth of the industry and maybe feature games relevant to the topic by exhibits (like Trauma Center by the giant heart).

Cast n chill is an enjoyable game w idle elements

Qotm: This would never ever work and is definitely a horrible idea but Alcatraz island would be wild, or really any former prison. Taking a place of pain and suffering and converting it to a gaming convention would certainly be novel. Cells could be converted into private demo booths, you could do escape rooms and arg experiences with horror theming. People coming and going can feel the fear of trying to escape a tiny island surrounded by sharks as opposed to American traffic. This is actual an awful idea please no one ever do this or any other hare-brained scheme with this historic place.

Thanks for the recommendation about Ascension Denied, Diamond! I played through it today and absolutely loved it. The puzzles were well designed, the interactions with Cybie were hilarious, and the moments leading into new acts were great surprises. I hope this developer makes more levels in this style. The developer put up a commentary video about the creation of the level: https://youtu.be/ByOVLJ7r90c

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

The Diatu (or Stumond if you will) bromance was very heartwarming to see happen. [he intended in the least parasocial way possible] The two times I've been on big trips overseas (as a large fairly unfit man myself) I set myself homework of a brisk 30 minute walk daily in the two weeks before going. Gotta get that cardio up and legs pumped for touristy activities!

QotM: inspired by reality show darling The Traitors, as well as the movie Clue, I'd like to see a retrogaming convention set in some kind of castle or stately home... that's ALSO the site of a murder mystery. Naturally there would be games to play and things to buy, encouraging lots of people moving around the space and providing lots of opportunities for alibis and moments of absence. There would also be scripted confrontations, clues to discover and the usual moments of intrigue, spurring lots of conversations and interactions between attendees that might not otherwise happen. You'd have the opportunity to opt yourself into the mystery aspect and win a big ol' retrogaming prize if you successfully named the murderer. How might you add yourself to the pool of squabbling sleuths? Claim victory in a retrogaming tournament or contest, of which there would be plenty to choose from. But even if you're just there to play some games, soak in the atmosphere and dress up in formal wear, I think the conclusion would be: "Event Enjoyed BY ALL".

So Stuart doesnt know the game Fist of Jesus?

I just got back from PAX West in Seattle and I waited two hours but I did play the demo that I already saw online but it was still worth it.

I forgot to answer the question of the month for last month, but my game of the year would be Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4, followed by Mouthwashing, but also Silent Hill 2 Remake.

Phoequinox

QotM: I can see this question is going to attract macabre answers like my initial thought, so I'll instead pivot to a different venue: An aquarium. Ideally, an underwater aquarium. Ambient lighting and sea life surrounding you could make for a deeply atmospheric gaming experience. I'm undecided if I would want the games and merch to be accurately themed, but if Ecco the Dolphin fans speak loudly enough, who am I to deny them?

DarthObvious

Not a gaming convention per se, but back when EA ran it's Madden Challenge tournaments in every NFL city, this included a day inside the Lambeau Field atrium in Green Bay. A few of the game day concession stands were open, and some Packer players were there because it was easy for them to just come up from the locker room before or after practice. Wouldn't work for a full scale gaming show, but it was pretty cool for what it was.

Curtis Bostick

Hearing the MES cover of Snake Eater in this was especially fun, because I just heard it played live the day before this uploaded

John Aguilera

Hey Stu! It was a pleasure to have you snipe ducks with the hypershot, I hope to see you again next year!

Multiplayer Dungeon

Omg Skunk Anansie. Have you heard their new album? Meltdown is one of my favourite songs of the year.
