Speaking of weekends, I recorded this on the evening of a three-day break and I think that explains my inability to pronounce some very basic gaming titles. My apologies! We'll see you again in a few weeks for our 2025 finale (gasp).

QotM: he was playable in the 2D Donkey Kong Countries but I miss playing as Rambi in 3D spaces. As such, my answer is a playable rhino. Rushing around with the horn would be a good time.

littleterr0r

My pick would be an axolotl because we have a pink one as a pet, but there's already a game where you play as a pink axolotl, so I'll say a pill bug, since that's another pet my daughter had when she was younger. What the pill bug would do I can't say, but then again, real pill bugs don't do much either.

PurpleComet

My vote would be an amoeba, preferably from Nintendo, so we can get an amoeba amiibo. Thank you, I'll be here all week

Taskbaarchitect

QotM: Diamond asked about underserved animals in video games and I'm going to go with... owls! There are plenty of owl NPCs, of course, chattering on at you endlessly from trees or falling asleep when they're supposed to be operating museums, but an owl as a playable character? Not that commonplace! (The only time I could think of was a brief segment in What Remains of Edith Finch and that didn't end well...) One of two things I know about owls are that they feast on small mammals and then regurgitate the bones and other leftovers as pellets later, which feels like a gruesome, aerial variant of Yoshi. The other is that their necks are ball-and-socket joints so they can turn them up and down and all around, which feels like it'd be a nice way to aim some kind of owl-vision, especially in 2D... So yeah, a sidescrolling game with an owl that controls a bit like Cape Mario, and rotates its head 360 to paralyse enemies with an owl stare before consuming them. Then it regurgitates the pellets as ammo to destroy, let's say... vampires, werewolves and other creatures of the night. Owls, Cowls & Howls - coming to PC and console just as soon as I've 100%ed Balatro...

QOTM: A metroidvania where you play as a hermit crab who finds new shells as you progress to unlock abilities.

Sebastiano Gerace

How dare you bring up red pandas without trigger warnings for Toronto listeners. I am sure Nadia was trembling thinking about the SkyDome destruction of 2002. QOTM: I want to play as the immortal snail trying to find the guy who took the $10 million dollar deal.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

I'm sure many listeners have a similar experience every week and I'll give voice to it this time - I had a bloody crap week off at home and this episode came out in time for my many-hours drive back to work. It cheered me up, mellowed me out and was an all round comfort. Thanks noughties!

preppy_prince

I’ve been revisiting old Retronauts episodes and recently listened to Episode 583: Gaming in the Year 2004 again, in which Bob suggests he may one day make a ‘Hot Coffee’ episode and asks listeners if they might be interested in hearing this. I wasn’t active on Patreon at the time so never responded to Bob’s call-out but I’m hoping better’s late than never as I’d very much like an episode centring around this or other times where game-related controversies drew mainstream media attention 👀

QOTM: A survival horror game starring an Anglerfish! You have your own built in silent hill flashlight 🔦

Jonathan Kade

My copies of Rockman IV and V are also Japanese, and I am okay with that. If the person with Civilization for the N-Gage wants to sell it hit me up. It's the only retail N-Gage game I don't have, and I love the N-Gage.

Jonathan Kade

Wait, Stuart, have you played Webbed? It is exactly the game you want. Even if the spider in it uses more silk than is feasible for a jumping spider. It's one of my favorite games of all time.

Jonathan Kade

My QOTM nomination is: the humble tardigrade, Earth's hardiest animal. Some kind of water based puzzle game akin to Bubble Ghost.

graham

QOTM Giant squid and/or octopus. Possibly a modern take on Rampage using something like the movement and attack mechanics from Carrion as you rip progressively larger locations to shreds trying to rescue your offspring from evil fishmongers?

J.P. McD.

I’m surprised Stu was so negative about 80s horror. All 80s Horror Movies Are Good! Regarding Friday the 13th specifically - part 2 opens with an impressive long shot, part 3 with some neat crane work. They weren’t phoning it in.

Phoequinox

QotM: I know marsupials have been thoroughly covered within video games, but I want to see a quokka show up in a game. Make it a detective horror game, so that hearing grisly details from bystanders has a surreal contrast to the perpetually happy quokka face.

Normallyretro

QoTM: A parasitic worm would be a great character to control. It could be a hitman style game where the goal is to infiltrate humanity as to gain power and to make the world more worm and less not worm. World War Worm

Tripodtrilogy

Stu I love Carly Rae Jepsen and saw her a few years ago. It was an absolute blast. I was going to go by myself because none of my friends are into her, but a few days before the show three friends said "fuck it" and bought tickets. 10/10 show.
