Hello, Patrons! December means it's time for reflecting on the Year That Was which I (Diamond Feit) will certainly do in great detail in an upcoming column dedicated to 2025. For now, however, I offer this podcast dedicated to a single game released this past summer.

Wait, what? A NEW game on Retronauts? Don't act so shocked; this isn't even the first episode released this year about a game released this year (not even close). No, we're talking Shadow Labyrinth this week, (Bandai) Namco's attempt at fusing Pac-Man, soulslikes, and their own rich arcade history into a single 2D action game.

Joining me is the only person I've seen vocalize intense enthusiasm for Shadow Labyrinth on the internet, returning guest Christa Lee. Some links you might need when listening to the show:

Hearing Christa’s deep dives into the Namco/UGSF lore surrounding this game is both endlessly fascinating and also hammers home why this game was such a commercial failure. It was literally made for 20 people, 15 of whom worked on it, probably.

I've been wanting to check out 100 Yen Life/Gamecenter for a while now! I've always enjoyed their arcades at PAX and Sakuracon and maybe Kumoricon? There was a Densha de Go! cabinet there this year, so I assume that was theirs as well, although it might not have been full sized.

If a Game patches in an "easy Mode" and you still can play the "normal" Version there never should be a discussion about difficulty because it doesn´t affect your beloved hard game. I don´t get the elitism in games always. Games are an entertainment medium but also games are the only entertainment medium you are not allowed to enjoy to the end. If i buy a book and i don´t like it or it isn´t for me, i still can finish it. Same goes with movies. If the game Patches in an "Easy Mode" and youn can´t play the original intended version anymore, now that´s a problem. I don´t want to take away the game from people who enjoy the hard mode but let me enjoy the easy mode if it doesnt affect you.

Made it to the last boss but couldn't beat them on Switch 2. Those final mazes really sucked but somehow I managed to beat best those but that excessive gauntlet did me in. No idea if those difficulty adjustments would help in any way but I'm not inclined to go back.
