Jeremy: Something a little different for you this week from myself, Diamond, and Kevin. Though, I should say, an approach that's long overdue: a tribute to some of the most influential people in the games industry to have passed over the course of 2025. We've had a few memorial episodes over the years, but they've always been focused on singular figures, like Satoru Iwata. This one, on the other hand, is more of a general memorial for many people in the industry. Although we spend the most time talking about Rebecca Heineman (a one-time guest of the show) and Tomonobu Itagaki, since we know the most about them and their work, we wanted to acknowledge many of the other games industry folks we lost this year, even when we don't know much about them or the particulars of their work. Artists, designers, actors, programmers, journalists—they're all a part of the medium we love, and we're all a little poorer for their loss.

So many unexpected sudden deaths since 2020, long covid is real. The pandemic never ended, ppl just stopped caring.

Right as I turned on this episode on the train, I see the news that Vince Zampella was just killed in a car accident. What the fuck, 2025?? Also I’d love if the new Virtua Fighter had a DOA guest to pay tribute.

Very tasteful tributes all around, and I like that the tone was one of celebrating everyone's achievements and presences. Very Retronauts.

Great tributes; made me both smile and feel sad, which is fitting for a good wake. I first heard of Rebecca Heineman from Jeremy's interview and was shocked to learn from this episode she worked the SNES port of Out of This World, a game which has stuck with me for decades. As difficult as these episodes must be, please continue them in the future.

Enjoyed this episode a lot. Didn’t realize so many people passed this year. Doing something like this annually or bi annually would be really nice I think.

I hear that this is your first time doing something to respectful and sombre, and it really was very respectful. I'd like to suggest not advertising the patreon next year. Thank you for this step into the conversation of mortality.

What do we owe the dead? We owe them everything. Great episode and tribute to these people. I would love another episode next year.

I know this is a video game focused podcast, but Jennell Jaquays TTRPG work was also groundbreaking. She wrote and published some of the first RPG adventures (Dark Tower and Caverns Of Thracia for OD&D), with game design elements that adventure writers are learning from to this day, and launched and edited one of the first RPG zines, The Dungeoneer, in addition to writing adventure and contributing to numerous other RPGs, like Runequest (which influenced The Elder Scrolls), and Traveller (which was an influence on Starfield, though Todd Howard will never admit it), well before she started at Coleco, and between when she left Coleco and before she started at Id.
