Jeremy: Some traditions must never be abandoned! But they can be updated.

We've been doing the Years-in-Review Revue thing long enough at this point to have lapped ourselves, so this time around, I've adjusted the format. Rather than attempting to walk through a comprehensive list of everything to have happened 50/40/30 years ago, I've asked our participants this week to name a few standout events and releases per year to discuss. This worked out pretty well! Rather than a whirlwind of quick remarks about everything, we* instead talk in greater detail about a handful of things that caught our attention or stuck in our memories for each year. Not bad. We can probably keep this up for another decade. So stick around, it'll be great.

I am glad that you were all on the eastern seaboard so that the subject of Rocky Mountain oysters didn’t come up.

The Channel F IP and trademarks are owned by an independent young engineer in metro Detroit who bought them from the construction electronics manufacturer, Zircon, who had ended up with the game consoles after Fairchild got out of the business. He would love to get the games available again. He is an enthusiast who wrote his own game for the Channel F based on an original board game.

Holy crap, I didn’t realize that Megablast by Bomb the Bass was ripping off John Carpenter.

Re: Breakout. I think that pong stepping away from a sports structure to something more abstract is an important narrative leap. We understand the drama involved in a sport like tennis or soccer, but breakout? It takes interpretation to justify what you're doing on screen. Are you an army laying siege on a castle wall, are the bricks representative of food stores? Maybe you're a bug lord in a space ship using an unknown weapon to free the matrix-like battery people from their overlord. This, I think, to designers who chose to think about these things, was an important, creative leap.
