Stuart: We’ve done a fair few Sonic episodes now, granted. Making up for lost time, perhaps? It’s one of gaming’s biggest serieses-es, it demands coverage. There’s at least one more in the can already and I’m planning on following up our epic Sonic 3 & Knuckles series with something hopefully just as fabulous. You may think it narcissistic to refer to my own work as “epic”, but… it was. If anything fits the definition of an epic Sonic 3 & Knuckles series, it was mine. Ours, I should say. Thankfully (?) Sonic CD only gets the one episode… for now.

It’s a game that I find misunderstood and hopefully that’s explained adequately here. I am under no illusion that I can change anyone’s mind, regardless of how effusive I am, but it’s my joint favourite Sonic title and I do not reach that conclusion lightly. As you’ll see in the episode, I’ve been there with the Sonic CD haters. I lived in that stinking swamp. Thankfully, I was able to claw my way out. Notably, the stench remains, but the opinions have improved.

Happy 2026, by the by. I’m away to MAGfest just after this goes out, so come and say “hullo” if you see me. Only say nice things though, please, as I didn’t travel 450,000 miles to have to spark you out in one punch – which will be the inevitable consequence of my being stepped to. It’s not that I want to fight anyone, it’s just that I am so good at fighting that any conflict with me will be so one-sided that it would not legally reach the threshold of “a fight”. And I love you all very much and do not wish to put you through hell. That’s why I keep making these Sonic episodes for Retronauts. To give you all a taste of heaven.

Seriously though, non-Sonic episodes soon. Promise. Sound off in the comments if you agree or disagree and I will address your brilliant insights/raving lunacy in the next episode of This Month In Retronauts, I imagine. Thanks for a fabulous 2025. May this be the finest year of international retrogaming podcasts ever conceived. Mwah. Kisses.

Sega of America is feverishly working to hire Spencer Nilsen to handle the bumper music on the American version of this podcast.

I am going to Magfest! Are you going to be on any panels?

Nicholas Castellina

You guys are really doing your damndest to make people turn this off in the first 10 minutes. Can we please give the reigns of this feed back to Jeremy? Brutal.

Holy shit it does sound like Gonzo

Happy New Year, all!! Enjoying this! I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds it hard to get into something new and instead opts for something familiar. Working on it, though! Also I had no idea that the reason rings and things are in the wall is because they’re there for a different time zone where you can access them; that did always puzzle me!

Sonic CD never really clicked with me, but in Mania I really appreciated the Super Peel Out which originated in CD. Casual players might just see it as another Spin Dash, but being in a running vs rolling position can really matter for tackling certain obstacles and enemies. Also, while the Drop Dash is controversial, I'm a fan of that too because I'm lazy.

This might be a niche topic only to me, but I compare Sonic's Genesis outings to Stevie Wonder's 1972-6 run of classic albums (probably my favorite run of albums ever): Sonic 1 is "Talking Book:" a launching point (though it didn't come from nowhere, of course) and more low-key than what came later. Sonic 2 is "Innervisions," building and expanding on its predecessor, grand in its own right. May be true fan’s favorite. ;) Sonic CD is "Fulfillingness' First Finale:" weird--maybe offputting at first--and approaching the limits of the existing paradigm. And finally, Sonic 3&K is "Songs in the Key of Life:" an eagerly-anticipated double-album, epic in every way, the mainstream's default favorite, and--most importantly--exposing the fault lines that would be its undoing. It utterly exhausted its creators and things would never be the same again... Also: No love for the US soundtrack at all? I know you Europeans grew up with the other soundtrack, but really? At least we got to hear a snippet of "Sonic Boom," which I love dearly, and which the US opening FMV got re-edited around. So that Sonic lands at the top of the mountain when the 2nd chorus hits, and begins his spinning exactly 9 bars later. Stuart and I gush about it in similar ways from opposite sides of the Atlantic. :)

Thanks for giving us another great Sonic podcast boys! Always enjoy starting up a Retronauts Podcast and hearing you three!

I had I similar experience as a kid where my primary exposure to Sonic CD was listening to the soundtrack on the Sonic Boom CD from Toys R Us which also had tracks from Spinball. It wasn’t until I got ahold of the PC version years later that I was able to play the game. I’m pretty sure I drove my parents nuts paying the music over and over again in the car.

This was the funniest episode of Retronauts ever. Please get COVID again Stu

Loved hearing the cut stuff at the ends of these episodes. The energy between Dave, Seumidh, and (COVID laden) Stu are always fantastic! The part about speedrunning history intrigued me. I am curious about the start of speedrunning in the UK/EU region. In the US, it started to take off with DOOM and then Quake thanks to the small demo files that could be uploaded to Speed Demos Archive. There is a big history chapter in the book Speedrun Science by Eric Koziel that goes into it but essentially console speedruns were limited to VHS recordings and manual verifications for a very long time. It’d be neat to see if Sonic CD had a time attack community form up on the early internet in the EU.

As a Final Fantasy enjoyer who has yet to dedicate any time to 14 I have felt the same as Seumidh pretty much for the last decade

Do I know or care about anything to do with sonic cd? No. Was this episode absurdly whacky and entertaining? Yes.
