In the dying days of the 2D platformer, Shiny Entertainment launched Earthworm Jim: an IP originally intended to sell toys, now mostly remembered for two quirky, high-quality video games. While the sheer novelty of the EWJ experience had its ups and downs, the character certainly made a name for himself in the mid-90s, and launched a studio that never ended up recapturing the magic of their invertebrate hero. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Stuart Gipp, and The A.V. Club's Will Hughes as the crew gets groovy and decides to eat dirt.

Frankie's Cauldron

i was under the impression the rights had been entirely sold away from Mr T and he couldn't get any money from it at all. There was an announced reboot after that with a promo cartoon where he specifically says "I'm cool with all of you cool cats." In a nice way. I've been following that ghouls work my entire life and he is truly a hateful wretch. There hasn't been any updates on that new ewj cartoon but the new design and direction sure looked good

Love the art, hate the artist

To my recollection, you could switch weapons in 2 for genesis if you had a six button pad

Earthworm Jim was particularly big among my friends because Doug TenNapel is from the city that neighbors my hometown. It was a point of pride at that time to have a local person become such a prominent figure in our entertainment. Of course, we weren't aware of his political views back then but by my teenage years it was well known he was a crank because he was extremely online from a pretty early era of the Internet. Sadly, his views are not especially rare in that part of the country, but it definitely makes the games impossible to revisit for me even though I did really enjoy them a lot as a Sega Genesis loving kid.
