Happy New Year, Retronauts supporters! We don't often associate the month of January with horror but Capcom has made a habit of releasing some huge games in this period. As a matter of fact, the company launched Resident Evil 2 in January—twice.

Yes, we're talking about both landmark survival horror titles known as Resident Evil 2. I know, I know, the REmake isn't retro yet, but 2019 was seven years ago and, as I argue on the air, the new RE2 has already left a major impression on the medium in that short time.

Stuart Gipp and Brian Clark join me (Diamond Feit) in a deserted police station for a lengthy chat about the Resident Evil 2 that Capcom doesn't want you to play, how an outside expert shaped the version that Capcom does want you to play, and a refresher on how this sequel completely revamped Resident Evil's image…only to do it again!

I agree with Stu about Mr X in the remake, but I have an issue more with games having a persistent, chasing threat/presence. It ruined Metroid Dread for me and it stopped me from finishing RE2/3 remakes. Part of the horror aspect of RE was the silence or "Im alone except all these monsters that can be anywhere" and having a big, indestructible man stomping around and basically zoning off an entire area of the map because he's more annoying than scary basically removes any of that anticipation or anxiety that something *could* be there and if I'm already hours deep into the game and have puzzles solved or am in process of solving them, it feels like padding to force me to avoid this threat to progress.

I believe Alan Wake 2 was also a response to RE2/3 remakes success. Great episode! Can't wait for an RE3 discussion! My one problem with RE2 remake is that it's literally a direct story remake of RE2, in that it doesn't acknowledge the story changes RE3 brought to the table, so what we know from both RE3 and R3Make is that a week before Leon and Claire come into town there's already a government response to the Raccoon City outbreak and supposedly a complete encirclement of the city by the military, which now doesn't make ANY sense how we have multiple people going into Raccoon City not knowing about the zombies or even the city is under siege. I just wish they had some weird handwaved explanation for it instead of totally ignoring it.

Another bangin episode.

I played through the original RE2 for the first time last month. Had a blast. I think I like the Remake more, but I was still very impressed. The aside about the theory of Hunk beside a misspelling of Hank made think of Castlevania Legacy of Darkness. The N64 Castlevania games have obvious Resident Evil influences, and one of the biggest is a bonus character that has to run through a number of levels to find lost kids. He wears armor that covers his face, has a gun and his name is Henry, or Hank.

FYI- Round One in Aurora IL was a test location for deadshot. Diamond if you come back to Chicago that might be your best bet.
