Jeremy: Well, it was bound to happen someday. And that day is today. Yes, our Final Fantasy Tactics deep dive has returned.

We will not be going as deep into the weeds again as we do this episode. But this once, we're talking about the first chapter of Tactics, as close to perfect a tutorial as you can imagine in a video game. Every moment of the first chapter sets the stage for the game to unfold, introducing new gameplay considerations and unveiling surprising plot revelations one after the other. There's a lot to discuss! There'll be another episode or two about the game after this, but we'll be covering a lot more ground a lot faster. But sometimes, you just gotta savor a masterpiece the way we do this episode.

By "we", I mean myself, Kaye Ross, John Learned, and of course Greg Melo. It's a whole party! And party we do, like it's early 1998, and we are being laid low by those jerks in the Dorter Slums all over again.

Update: The podcast file has been corrected to remove the audio level error. D'oh!

*Multiple* episodes covering this most perfect of video games? Praise St Ajora!

There’s about a 30-second segment at the first musical interlude (12:44-13:09) where the music obscures the conversation.

Much of FFT's story is influenced by the 15th century War of The Roses, as the "War of the Lions" hints at. Bankrupt after a long war? Powerful quasi-independent duchies holding real power? The death of a weak king leading to two rivals vying for the crown? Victory being secured by someone with a very weak/non-existent claim who immediately marries the sister of the deposed king? All happened in 15th century England. I'm not sure where the Lucavi fit in though...

Ah, not that it's that important, but I've meant to point this out in the first episode's comments already: The original PS1 version does indeed make the turn order available to players. It's a bit hidden, I think you have to press either the triangle or select button while no unit is selected to access it, and also not as comfortably displayed as in the remake, but I've relied on it a lot when playing through the game back in the day.

I have to admit, this was a game I never finished because it did just get too tough for me, but I’ve always loved it and my brother loved it so much he broke through that barrier and beat it back in the day and he’s currently playing the new version of it. I DID manage to finish Chapter 1 back in the day and the in depth convo about the story of this game brought me back because that was what helped me persevere for as long as I did! I’m looking forward to the other discussions on this one, FFT is a game worthy of the format!

I really should at least try this game before listening to all these episodes... 😅
