The original Dead or Alive was Virtua Fighter at home.

Chad

Always great to hear Jess!

Nuno Amaral

Mentions of Joe Dante, Dick Miller, DS9, Barbara Crampton, Jhonen Vasquez, Evil Toons, RLM, Hbomberguy and videogames. This, THIS is why Retronauts is peak podcasting. Also the lovely hosts and wonderful community, of course.

Nuno Amaral

QotM: A basic answer, but Super Mario bros for the NES. I was 5 or 6 when I first saw it in 85 and it blew my mind. It felt like I was playing a cartoon.

Kormakur Gardarsson

Re: Castlevania Belmont’s Curse - I interpreted the trailer as being about a new Belmont (Trevor and Sypha’s daughter, presumably) absconding with the Vampire Killer to do their father’s job.

Craig

Great episode!

Jonathan Kade

Console Archives got off to an interesting start given that Ninja Gaiden 2 is free with subscription on NSO NES and CoolBoarders is free with subscription on PlayStation and available to purchase on PlayStation cheaper and more fully-featured.

Jonathan Kade

Small correction: Replicade is 1/6 scale, Quarter Arcades are 1/4 scale.

Jonathan Kade

I’m with Stuart, Endtroducing… is definitely a candidate for the best album of 1996.

Jonathan Kade

My nomination for best launch game of all time: Minestorm for the GCE Vectrex. Still the best Asteroids-style game around.

Patrick McClafferty

QotM: while I love Mario World, I played awhile after it and the system came out. So I'll go with a favorite launch game which I got with the system in a timely manner, Luigi's Mansion. I love the atmosphere and gameplay. It was a good showcase of what the system offered compared to the other things I had.

Ana

I refuse to accept that Sonia Belmont isn't canon. I like the PS2 games, but Iga didn't need to erase our girl like that. Sonia will forever be Trevor's mom in *my* canon!

Donovan

I don't know about minecraft saturn, but my favorite way to play Cave Story is the Genesis port. So retro ports are at least sometimes pretty cool.

Karl Ruben Weseth

Would not be mad if Jess on TMIR became a regular occurence. Lovely episode!

Jeff Peterson

The clear winner for best launch game is Super Mario World. A HUGE game at launch for free! One of the greatest Mario games ever made! A game that continues to evolve and grow over the years with its huge romhacking scene! It’s perfect in nearly every way.

Taskbaarchitect

QotM: Time for another of my overly-rambling answers in which I exhaustively dissect-- Oh. No, turns out the best launch exclusive for any console was Super Monkey Ball. Alright, cheers! ...Wait, what, you're saying that Super Monkey Ball doesn't count because it's an enhanced port of an arcade title? I will actually fight you, but if you're going to be intransigent, it's Rogue Leader. Alright, cheers!

Normallyretro

QoTM: I would say Legendary Axe for the Turbo-Grafx 16 was an excellent launch title that was praised by almost every magazine for obvious, well deserved reasons. It kind of reminded me of what Astyanax wanted to be but didn't exactly achieve (not to say that Astyanax was bad).

Jason J

I had no idea Stu is credited in Lego City Undercover. I have great memories of playing through it co-op with my son. It’s basically Lego GTA and probably my favorite Lego game. I wish they made a sequel.

Jason J

QoTM: Night Trap for Sega CD

William Quezada

My comment being read by Stu made my day! Also, best launch title for me is super Mario world. I have so many fond memories of playing the game with my older brother.

haughtybiscotti

I, like Jess, never ever got consoles on launch. The whole notion of launch titles didn’t really matter to me until I was a working adult with money to spend. It fits that the first console released after I completely finished school, the Switch, bought with grad school graduation money houses my pick. Breath of the Wild really is a game I keep thinking about nearly 10 years on. It did everything I wanted, exceeded my expectations , even its oft cited flaws don’t bother me. I simply love existing in it. 500 hours across 2 playthroughs, and not even Tears can match that feeling it gave me in 2017. It is pure magic.

Peter Breukers

Please more episodes with you three. Amazing dynamic 😁

DrTacoMD

QotM: The GameCube was the first Nintendo home console to launch in the US without a flagship Mario platformer (no offense to Luigi and his mansion). But I didn't care, because I was busy sinking dozens of hours into Star Wars Rogue Leader. It sounds strange now, but at the time a new high-budget Star Wars game felt exciting, at least if you were 14. It was the perfect launch game: stellar graphics, tight controls, and enough challenges and unlockables to last you until more games could release on the system. I still boot it up occasionally for a quick trench run.

Curtis Bostick

I just needed to give Jess props on that impressive Pikachu voice.

Phoequinox

QotM: It really comes down to Nintendo consoles for me. Super Mario World was the launch game I played the most, Mario 64 was the one that impressed me the most and Breath Of The Wild was the one I enjoyed the most. Of the three, I have to give the nod to Mario 64. It's not perfect, but it's a technical marvel given how smoothly a 2D platformer made the transition to 3D in a time before anyone knew what that would look like. Fun to control, explore and experience.

Daniel Worthintendo

QOTM: G'day lads, so favorite/best game that launched on a new system, bit of a curve ball for you all but I am going to go with Street Pass Plaza on the 3DS. Came built in with the system and only came with Puzzle Swap and Find Mii. Find Mii was a really neat little RPG and Puzzle Swap was a great showcase for the 3D features with the really cool puzzles you could get. Street Pass was such a great feature to the 3DS and one of the things that the system does that nothing else ever did. Really added to this great feeling of community when you'd see that little green light glow. Over the years, the Plaza received a heap of updates in the form of new puzzles to advertise for new games and even better was new DLC games upgrading from 2 games to 13. Mii Force, Monster Manor, Ultimate Angler, Slot Car Rivals are all soo much fun to play. There was a time where I was putting over an hour into this thing each and every day just to do everything. I remember my first trip to Japan and just spending soo much time clearing up my Street Passes and playing them while waiting in line at Tokyo Disney. To this day I'm fairly certain it's my most played 3DS title at several hundred hours played. It's such a great fun package, even at launch with just the 2 titles, it was just such a fun, unique title that nothing has done since. While wild 3DS's may be rare, thankfully certain online communities are keep it alive and I'm soo happy it can still be experienced.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

Oof the age discussion at the start did more psychic damage than usual, and I'm usually pretty at peace with being over-35. Once more I'll draw the parallel to boomer/genX dad's who seemed to listen to more sport/car/fishing radio or TV than they actually did doing that thing. Except video games. That's us, us old people. It would be very interesting to learn how many younger people listen to Retronauts and why. Heck even an episode about it, if you can scrape up some eloquent Gen Zeds to talk about their perceptions of pre-2000 gaming.

StickFlip

More Jess on these community podcasts! She's great!

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

QOTM - BotW and it isn't even close (unless you were ten when the SNES launched I suppose) It's as if the N64 launched with OoT, or the GameCube with Resi4. The only other modern launch game comparable for critical reception and influence I can think of is Halo. Thoughts and prayers to all the small group of unfortunates who just didn't have the game click in their brains correctly for whatever reason. [Bah away with you pendants and your utterings of "but WiiU game!"]

Aaron Hammer

QotM: Soulcalibur was a launch title for the NA (and Europe) launch of the Dreamcast. One of the top reviewed games of all time. The best entry in its series and I was still playing it THIS weekend with my boys and their friends. My oldest begged me to let him take the Dreamcast + 2 Agetec Arcade sticks back to college with him and I hope I made the right choice. (I let him)

pimento

BotW and Tetris (GB) both come to mind, but they both argueably ports to varying extents so I'm going to say Mario 64. It was a statement of intent and expressions product capability to a level that nearly matches Tetris on GB and it also thoroughly defined a product category (3D platformers) to a point that anything that released before it basically doesn't count.
