Kevin: We’ve covered a lot of different fighting game topics on this podcast, but none are quite as flashy as today’s, the Guilty Gear series. Arc System Works’ favorite of rock music enthusiasts and anime fans alike has been around for 28 years, and in that time has gone from an obscure, flawed console exclusive to a mainstay of the fighting game world. It’s not an exaggeration to note its incredible influence on a subset of fighting games known colloquially as “anime fighters” or “airdashers” that are built around aggression and movement; nor can one discount its popularity among LGBTQ+ players, whom the series has openly courted in recent entries.

Fellow fighting game fan Diamond Feit joins me to chat about the series, alongside two new guests: Patrick Miller and Irene Koh. Perhaps known for their professional accomplishments as a game designer and an artist, or maybe by their fighting game handles pattheflip and imouto, respectively, Pat and Irene not only are some of Guilty Gear Xrd’s strongest soldiers, but they also organize events and help connect people interested in playing the game. Their insights genuinely made this podcast a joy to record, and if you aren’t too familiar with these games already, I hope you’ll come away from it wanting to check them out. Play Guilty Gear!

I once had a dream that arc system works wanted me to fix the story to Guilty Gear. For as broken as it is I actually like what Missing Link’s instant kill system was going for, that if you lose concentration for a moment you get taken out. Still though the implementation was pretty flawed as in the limited time I spent actually doing matches I did one on complete accident

Very happy to hear Sailor Moon S mentioned. Tldr; My local FGC played it one week kind of as a joke, realized the game was good, and then spent a year cracking open the meta and organizing tournaments around the country. I ended up winning an AniEVO championship and even traveling to Japan to help host it at EVO Japan. One of the wildest rides of my life, and it's all because Arcsys made a good (bonkers) Sailor Moon game in 1994.
