Welcome to the first post of 2020 and, by a complete coincidence of timing, our very first patron-exclusive episode. I know our decision to offer patron-exclusive content doesn't sit well with everyone, but this episode neatly demonstrates what this move allows us to do. "List Inventory" is something I've been wanting to produce since the Zork episode cold opening, but the format wouldn't translate well to a pure podcast format. But by creating it as a patron-exclusive, we can create dual posts—audio AND video—which better suits the material, I hope.

This episode is completely and totally an experiment (the first of many experiments I hope to conduct as exclusive content). I will be looking to your feedback on this one! Would you like to see us attempt to play more works of interactive fiction, or is this a giant waste of time? Your opinion truly matters here.

Anyway, settle in an enjoy us getting Arthur Dent killed and the earth annihilated by Vogons. Better yet, check out the companion video post and watch us getting Arthur Dent killed.

Description: The Retronauts East crew (Jeremy Parish, Ben Elgin, Benj Edwards, Chris Sims) don their peril-sensitive sunglasses and attempt to escape the planet before the Vogons arrive in this real-time playthrough of Infocom's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

While I have moved to the $5 dollar tier, your comment on this post kind of demonstrates why I'm not the happiest about the change. It was a coincidence that this ended up being exclusive. While it may demonstrate what you hope to accomplish with the exclusive episodes, that is a happy accident. At what point will the exclusive episodes be actually designed from the ground up to be exclusive instead of just moved from the free list to the paid list? While obviously this change can't happen right away. What will actually make these episodes feel worth it on a regular basis when they were intended to be free when they were recorded?

Interesting idea. I remember enjoying the first ten minutes of the Zork episode where you played the intro. Text adventures might do well with the podcast format.

This idea worked fairly well (see my post on the video companion to this for more). Since this is the podcast portion, I just wanted to say that I support these experiments as long as the podcast portion does not fall by the wayside and remains the focus for Retronauts. As long as there is always a .mp3 for me to download and listen too, then by all means experiment away!

This was simultaneously fun (because everyone involved is entertaining) and INFURIATING because I know the first section of H2G2 so well that the game no longer seems obtuse to me. So when everyone promptly forgot about the dressing gown after "wear gown" was met with "you don't have that to wear" I thought I was going to deliver a Charlie Brown scream. I can't wait til you get to the Dentraasi room, which at the time had more steps than any other Infocom puzzle ever had.

Since these episodes are Patreon exclusive, is there any way to download the full resolution 1400x1400 album art so I can attach it to the mp3 file for my collection? Usually the Patreon episodes have placeholder art or no art (like this episode, the art is just blank). I would then update the file when they would publish on the free feed with the official episode art that published within the episode post on the main website. Since these are Patreon exclusives, that’s no longer an option.

This was a lot of fun, but I do think Benj was spot on when he said that picking one of the hardest text adventures ever made might not have been the best idea. I feel like Lurking Horror or Nord & Bert Couldn’t Make Head or Tail of It would have been kinder. The latter in particular is done in bite-sized chunks and involves a lot of fun wordplay.

El Pescado

I love the idea behind this episode and am all for more of them. Keep up the great work guys.

Do more, it's almost like a serial radio program...very much to Douglas Adam's spirit and history.

Dr Strange Blood

I love it. I loved the incompetence. It sounded like you had a fun time doing this and that's what's more important to me. Fun over progress. Ok maybe not if there was 5 more hours and no progress at all. Like that would need editing. But this was a nice thank you for signing up for the $5 a month for me, as well as the impetus!

Loved this ep. The preview inspired me to be a patron. I have my IIGS and a physical version of this in my basement (I don’t think I have the fluff anymore). If I have time today, I may hook up the IIGS and see how far I can get. Love the idea of List Inventory. Hope you do many more.

Holy gosh. I loved this so much. It inspired me to try my hand again (I won this in the late 80's) and got a step or two beyond you guys when I was stymied. Please, more of these, and please, continue with Hitchhiker's Guide. Awesome stuff, as usual. Cheers!
