Hey folks—Bob here. No, you're not seeing things; I decided to post January's second Friday podcast WAY ahead of time as a special bonus to all of you early adopters of the new $5 tier, and to also give you a sense of the kinds of podcasts we'll be offering at this level. Thanks so much for your support! (Hopefully the episode appearing out of order in your feed won't drive you crazy.) This episode was originally intended to post on 1/17, meaning  your next exclusive Friday podcast will hit on 1/31. So if you want to pace yourself, you can hold onto it until then, or listen now. That's the power of choice!

Also, there will be a new Retronauts cover from Nick Daniel attached to this in the future, and included in a separate post so you can see it in all its splendor. (I didn't let him know I was posting this early.)

As for this episode, I've wanted to do a Super Mario RPG episode for a while, so here I am finally getting around to it in my ninth year of hosting Retronauts. I'm a big fan of all the Mario RPG brands—all of which are old enough for Retronauts episodes—but I decided to begin with where it all started: Square's 1996 SNES release. And for this discussion, I pulled in my Talking Simpsons Network pal Henry Gilbert, and a newcomer to Retronauts, Maddie Copp! Maddie's done quite a bit of art for the Talking Simpsons Patreon, and has been on a few of our podcasts over there. She's a big fan of Super Mario RPG, and since she was in town, it was the perfect time to record this one! She's got her own Patreon too, so maybe throw a few bucks her way!

Thanks once again for joining the Patreon at this tier. Expect more standard, full-length episodes like this one at the $5 level in the future!

I almost 100%ed this in the summer of ‘96 with the help of the official guide. There was one treasure chest I couldn’t reach even with the guides’ help. It was the first RPG I owned. Others that I rented I just couldn’t get into (FFII, Y’s, etc). I’m still not really an RPG guy other than the occasional Paper Mario game.

Why would you want to cheat in a really good game?

This was my gift for getting an A average on my last report card in fourth grade. I hated my teacher that year, but the motivator worked! One of my favorite RPG's ever.

It's funny because I'm a patron to Maddie's Patreon (thanks to Talking Simpsons) and when I saw this come up I was like "I hope they got Maddie for this!" So between these two things I've dusted off the Wii U and play this again. To your point about Square shoving as many minigames as they could in this game, one you didn't mention was after battle if you get Lucky! you have to play the Yoshi egg game. Which as a kid always reminded me of finishing a level in Yoshi's Island for some reason. I really hope you guys cover some of the follow up games. Especially The Thousand Year Door, since it's just the best game.

Thanks, Bob! Always great to have Henry onboard!

Thanks guys, this podcast totally did the game justice. I hope Maddi comes back for more shows, she was a great guest. I wasn’t familiar with the Magic City Geo track from Legend of Mana and it was like finding a b-side you’ve never heard from a favorite classic album. Also, anyone who enjoys SMRPG’s soundtrack should check out Patti Rudisill’s string covers! https://youtu.be/xyI1Q8DTqzA

Neat! I just updated to the $5 tier when I saw the post about the new episode on Twitter. When I did that I grabbed the new rss link emailed to me but the new episode doesn't appear to be on there yet. Is there any special action I need to take or a different rss link I need to use?

Paul

Yep, they showed up after about 30 minutes, just in time for my commute home, thanks!

Mario RPG is the game that at least got me to respect RPGs, even if I still don't have the patience for them. It was one of the rare games that I bugged my mom to take me to Blockbuster to rent so much she just broke down and bought it for me, after it was never in stock at Blockbuster. While I know younger me didn't have the patience, I am upset that I missed out on everything else. I dove into exploring SNES RPGs via emulation a few years later, and while I have played throght good chunks of the Final Fantasy 4, 6, and Chrono Trigger, Earthbound is the only other one I've ever finished, and that was only recently on the SNES Classic.

I am glad the soundtrack got mentioned - I remember swiping my parents’ tape recorder and putting it next to the tv speaker to record my favorite songs from the game to listen to the rest of the time! I also loved how short it was, relatively speaking - I’ve played through it numerous times and always enjoyed how breezy it is.

Excellent episode. I enjoyed hearing Bob's opinion had evolved from his more critical one of a few years back. It is a fairly easy game (although eight-to-nine year-old me could never breakdown the Marrymore door), but it's also possibly the most likable one of all time. Please cover Paper Mario 64 and the peak of the whole plumber RPG oeuvre, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door at some point, too.

This is one of those episodes I know I'll listen to multiple times, much like the Stardew Valley ep. In reference to the Marrymore scene where the dudes all kiss, I can only recall a kiss from Toadstool one time. The other variations seem to be a punishment for not collecting the items around the pews quickly enough as the ceremony begins. Hearing the music here made me want to play again, btw. Cheers!

Maddie was a great addition! I hope she can join again.

Having just subscribed to the Patreon, I can't help chuckling at Paper Mario being described as "dead" now that we're ten days out from the Origami King.
