Hello, friends. This is the video version of Episode 271. It is also available in an audio-only companion post if you prefer!

If enough people enjoy this test pilot effort, we'll keep going with improvements, i.e. tidy up the recording space, arrange the crew so the wide-angle lens doesn't make me and Chris look enormous, maybe get a picture-in-picture close-up of the whiteboard going....

So let us know what you think about all of this!

List Inventory: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Session 1

The Retronauts East crew (Jeremy Parish, Ben Elgin, Benj Edwards, Chris Sims) don their peril-sensitive sunglasses and attempt to escape the planet before the Vogons arrive in this real-time playthrough of Infocom's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

This is a very cool idea. I know that cost is a factor, but I feel you'll need more cameras in the future. One for the board, and then after some seating arrangement, specific camera(s) for individuals

Phil Cobley

This is such an awesome idea! Although I do wonder if choosing Hitchhiker’s Guide is Jeremy’s attempt at highlighting the worst traits of adventure games ;) Something that might make it easier for the players, and perhaps help out Jeremy/the narrator is to share the screen to another display that they can see. It could also be captured and used in the video. Specific to Hitchhikers - I don’t know if it’s playable outside the UK, but the BBC host a web based version with some graphical embellishments at https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/1g84m0sXpnNCv84GpN2PLZG/the-game-30th-anniversary-edition Overall I really like this idea! It worked really nicely on your Infocom episode and would be great to see as part of Retronauts or its own series!!!

Elliot Long

I like this. Would watch/listen to more of this.

My only concern with this idea is that Retronauts is known as a podcast. I have all of the episodes downloaded and saved to my phone and I listen to them as I travel around. That is somewhat difficult if I'm out for a hike and the next episode that plays is a video version. As long as the video portions don't overtake the audio foundation of Retronauts, and remain as companion pieces only to the audio podcast Retronauts, then I'm ok with this idea. I hope this made sense. EDIT: Realized I didn't give any feedback on the episode itself. Oops! I think this idea worked really well for text adventure games. I agree with the poster above about acquiring a wide-lens if this idea goes forward, otherwise the people on the edges of the camera look like they are staring off into space instead of at the people in the room (like Chris and Jeremy were in this video). The use of the whiteboard was smart so we could follow along, and I agree with the poster who gave the idea of a video feed for text inputs. I greatly empathized with Chris as I also get extremely annoyed with text adventure vocabulary! Watching all of the reactions brings back so many memories and quite a few chuckles! Finally, it was nice to finally be able to put faces to names (Benj was the only one who looked almost exactly like I imagined)!

I enjoyed seeing Ben, Benj, and Chris go through the motions that I went through many years ago playing this game. I agree with the feedback already given above, but I also recommend cutting the typing of commands, unless you have a feed of the screen capture of the game. I do understand that making the video would become much more complicated if you have multiple cameras and such. Continuing to do this would come down to if this is worth the effort. I do enjoy the experiments and look forward to seeing what else you attempt or the continuing adventures of Arthur Dent not getting hit in the head with a brick.

The "retro podcasters sitting around playing text-based adventure games badly" genre is so 2019

I had a little trouble paying attention to this one, maybe because it felt more low-key and hangouty. I notice I have a tough time with podcasts like that. I'd probably try a few more to be sure, but I suspect I'd skip these if it came up in the feed, which isn't in any way a jab at the concept (and everyone above seems to like it), just not really for me. Very cool to see new things being tried and I definitely would not mind more video content!

Great episode idea! I suggest using https://www.trizbort.com/ for mapping and taking notes, though. This way Jeremy could display the Trizbort map on a monitor and maybe share the screen on the stream.

Christopher Boyce

I loved this so much. I feel quite opposite to how Phillip above feels. My only suggestion is I’d prefer them to be longer! Which you should take as a compliment. Very happy to be supporting at the new $5 tier

Reuben Levine

I love the idea of having Retronauts video content. I’m excited to see what you guys do with it in the future.

Allan Berry

I really enjoyed this episode, and I really enjoyed the video component. I'm really excited to see what other games you could play. I feel like some Sierra games are going to break Chris...

Jeremy and Bob, I have to start off by saying, I really love this! I, for one, love the “hang vibe”, which, from my understanding, is a big draw for many successful podcasts. Great chemistry-a premise I’ve not experienced in podcasting or video before-and a video stream I won’t soon forget. Many of my following critiques, I’m certain you’re already working on, and may have already been presented by other posts, but I would love to share my two cents: { * one table * less obscurement of guests faces (microphones) * second PiP screen (laptop content) * longer form of discussion/longer run time * tighter shot (different lens?) * opening graphic sequence with theme music * opening shot of host (presenting the premise/monologue before presenting the guests} I’ve been a Retronauts fan since your first episode of the first run many years ago and it’s by far my favorite VG podcast, with nostalgia being the big factor in my enjoyment of the show (42/M). Keep up the great work and I hope to see more of this type of delightfully fun content!

Retronauts Let's Plays? Yes please! I enjoyed this - format might need tightening up a bit, just so that things are visually a bit clearer, and you might want to provide some kind of hints for a game like this, so you aren't hitting your heads against a brick wall for the entire episode. But the concept is fun - personally, I find old adventure games a bit impenetrable to go back to, so I'd much rather watch other people suffer instead.

Brian Hortin

Really enjoyed this; looking forward to more content like it.

Colbin Erdahl

Yes, more of this. I would like to see you continue a game through multiple episodes, might be less fumbling that starting a new game each time. I agree with those that wanted to see the whiteboard closer up on the video. Great job, keep it up!

Normallyretro

I'm smiling like an idiot watching this! This is so f'ing dope. Yeah, I can't wait for more.

Richard Layton

I really enjoyed this and even finally became a Patreon when I heard about this content. I hope that you’ll finish HHG

Mondofinaction

I'm just getting to the exclusive episodes. Yes, please more of these. Either in person, when social distancing eases up, or remote.
