I vowed 12 months ago that 2021 would be the Year of Golgo 13—by which I meant I was going to publish a couple of videos about Golgo 13 games. I did not expect 2021 to be the one where Golgo 13 made international news because its creator passed away after working on the series for more than 50 years! But here we are, and with the topic front of mind for multiple reasons, it only seemed right to make a podcast about it, too.

So, this week, I connected with Diamond and one of the show's favorite men-in-Japan to talk about the cultural clout of the Golgo 13 series, the history of manga and gekiga, and of course the (surprisingly few) games starring Golgo 13 himself.

And because Golgo 13 continues to make news, we learned about one game we missed just a couple of days ago—a CDi interactive comic that no one had bothered to chronicle in the multiple English-language resources we referenced in putting together this episode. That's Golgo 13 for ya, though. You never see him coming....

This episode was made for me and only me. Thank you.

This was really fun and y'all got me to buy a copy of "Flagburner" (and probably everything else on Comixology). I'm a little surprised that trashy American "men's adventure" novel series like Mack Bolan and Remo Williams didn't come up since those are the closest thing we have, but it was great even without that.

I've never heard of Golgo 13 before, which is kind of surprising! But, sounds very unique - I was reminded of the 'The Torpedo' comics from your description. Great stuff, cheers!

I guess I have the classic American Golgo 13 experience because of the NES game and...not much else for a while. But I did love your NES Works video which made me wish I had bought the CIB copy I saw at Pink Gorilla recently.

I also got introduced to Golgo 13 by watching The Professional on VHS back in ‘95.

How good would it be if io interactive just got the Golgo 13 license, even just for a skin/voice pack?

I love these episodes about games based on anime franchises. I wonder if you will have an episode about Astro Boy/Osamu Tesuka games sometime to add to the group.
