Lock and load, everyone, we are running and gunning our way through the most explosive series on the NEO GEO (and beyond): Metal Slug. Born from ex-Irem employees who just wanted to blow stuff up, the original 1996 arcade release delivered high-stakes action via the finest animation seen on the platform. Many sequels followed, with the series even enduring the bankruptcy of SNK and the demise of the NEO GEO itself.

Host Diamond Feit is no lone wolf taking on the forces of General Morden, recruiting frequent Retronaut Stuart Gipp and arcade expert Lord BBH to outline the games that preceded Metal Slug, identify key people behind the series (at least, those with known identities), and discuss the ups and downs of all eight mainline entries.

This episode was requested by Patreon supporter Allan Berry. Thank you Allan. YOU'RE GREAT!

Amazing!! I've literally been waiting years for a dedicated Metal Slug episode from you guys!

I audibly gasped when I saw this in my notifications. I'm gonna listen to this while I'm relaxing in my "rawket lawnchair"

Stuart is rocketing up my "favorite Retronauts" rankings with his terrible jokes and secret loving ways.

I decided to replay the games via the PS4 version of Metal Slug Anthology. The port of Metal Slug 6 though is shockingly poor, with slow down and stutters all over the place but I don't know if that's the fault of the original PS2 port or errors caused by them porting that game itself up to the PS4 generation and then me playing that via PS5. However I did encounter the trolling drop shot placement though like you said, second level of Metal Slug 6 you get a drop shot as you're going up a hill fighting enemies, but all your drop shots will land in front of you and roll backwards downhill making it completely useless.

Great episode! It's a shame the series peaked with the first one, feels like there was so much potential there. I played the series via the Metal Slug Anthology. But I didn't play via the input-lag-ridden PS2 version, no I played it via the Wii version that made you shake the Wii remote to throw grenades (and probably had input lag)! It didn't support the Classic Controller for some reason but it did support the Gamecube controller. But then you had to use the analog stick. Just so many baffling decisions there. Having played all the games closely together, they do kind of run together. Given that, I can see why so many people say Metal Slug 3 is the best one. The zombie level and final battle of that game are what I remember most clearly. If I'd play the games enough to do a 1-credit clear I'd probably remember it differently.

I have watched Batman '89 a million times and just learned today that Eckhart was Porkins.

This was great fun! I've played very little Metal Slug - and I really did appreciate learning where the name came from. I'm inspired to check out more. Seemed like 3 was the best one?? Really nice podcast - thanks!!

if that 40 kits for nbbm is even remotely accurate it's wild because I played that at a convenience store in my small rural Washington town in the mid 90s once when I was like 6 or 7. I only remember because I didn't know the name and for years I always wanted to play it again and finally googled green ninja man baseball bat beat em up in 2009 and found it was almost the name of the game.

Forgotten fighting game mention! The Alien was a playable fighter in SVC Chaos (as well as MMZ Zero which wasn't mentioned in that episode I think)

Metal Slug 1 is $3.99 (50% off) on Switch until July 6.

Went and played the first Metal Slug after this pod, and it's unfathomable to me how anyone could get through that game on one token. Maybe an AI could after 14 million repetitions lol

It's Retronauts history! Stuart's terrible take ends up being the correct one: Metal Slug 3 is the worst.
