Nintendo might be flying high with the Switch, but the last generation of hardware sent them into a bit of a tailspin. 10 years ago (to this very day) saw the release of the Wii U, which evolved the company's decades of dual-screen experiments into a console unlike anything that came before it. But did Nintendo simply think too far outside of the box? On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Henry Gilbert, and Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang of The Kit & Krysta Podcast as the crew celebrates the console that helped us all ring in The Year of Luigi. I know it's the consensus that the naming convention killed the Wii U but are we really to believe that people thought the $300 new Nintendo item was an accessary? Up to that point, it would have been the highest priced SKU Nintendo had ever produced. Basic logic would dictate that it's a new console, not an add-on. My guess is that people got burnt with the Wii with most gathering dust after the first few years. The amount of shovelware was obscene and consumers didn't want a repeat with the Wii U so no one bought in.

It can't have been ten years already? Man I'm old. Also the Wii U did a lot of things right and had a spectacular lineup of games (most of which finally got the attention they deserved after Switch ports). It's still a fantastic system.

One of the best system of all time thank you so much guys! From a big Snes fan that live in Quebec, Canada 😍

Oh my god I’m old, the Wii U does not feel like it came out ten years ago…

Just wasn't in the cards. If Captain Toad can't sell a system, nothing will.

What a great episode, especially for people like me who skipped the entire generation! Very cool to get an insider view from NoA too, would love to have the guests back for more insider stories if they can share them!Happily life events/financial considerations lined up perfectly for me with skipping a "bad" console, and getting a 3DS later on once content and any issues had been ironed out!

I loved the Wii U. Captain Toad is the best and for some reason my kids prefer to play Smash on it instead of the Switch. I also want them to take Kirby's clay aesthetic and remake the Mother games with it. (Like the models in the guide!) I think the install base is big enough for the Switch 2 to be an expansion. Give me a mic, DS/3DS card slot, DS style touch screen and stylus. A hinge to connect the original as a top screen.

Such a missed opportunity that the Wii U version of Minecraft didn't use the touchscreen for the full inventory, that would have ruled.

Great episode, retronauts has been killing it lately. The star fox episodes also ruled

Re:accessory mania. Didn’t the Wii U come out shortly after the U Draw tablet came out and landed with a silent thud (and killed THQ in the process)? In my memory it looked exactly like the Gamepad.

I remember playing it at a mall when it came out but it’s the only BIG Nintendo system I never even bothered to try, and the name WAS confusing because I have multiple people in my life who assumed it was an accessory and not an entirely new system! They really need to put this HD Zeldas on Switch and I was happy Kit and Krysta mentioned that Nintendo’s just waiting for the right time!
