Greetings, patrons! Behold, a brand-new podcast devoted to YOU, our faithful supporters, as Diamond Feit and Stuart Gipp present the first-ever Retronauts community podcast, This Month in Retronauts.

Our goal is to replace Diamond's weekly column once a month with a program focused on your comments, your questions, and catching up on all recent retro happenings: things published on the site, episodes of the podcast, and any new releases that might be of interest to fans of old video games. And in true Retronauts fashion, in between our recording session and publication of this episode, a game we discussed revealed a sequel is on the way. What timing!

We sincerely hope you enjoy this new show; please let us know your thoughts below. And don't forget to answer the listener question Diamond poses at the end, we'll read our favorite answers next month!

I like the new show! Not being able to finish old games is probably a common problem. Getting older and smarter helped me. I struggle to finish KOTOR, the F.E.A.R. games, Pikmin 1, and FFVI.

It will be hard to do without Diamond's weekly column. If the column is going away, I would love to hear more of Diamond's personal reminisces of all things retro c. 1985-2010 (?) on the new format, for which I have much appreciation.

Frankie's Cauldron

I usually don't comment here but Henry never once seemed like he was being mean to anyone! You're all very nice! I love this new style of episode!

As for games I haven't been able to finish, mine is The Elder Scrolls Morrowind. It was included free with a new graphics card sometime around 2002-2003. Being much younger, I didn't quite understand the nuances of a "hard" CRPG and could barely make it much further beyond the second town (Balmora). Around 2011, I picked up Oblivion, and being older and having more experience with CRPGs, I loved it and did multiple 40-60 hour playthroughs (never beating it), which inspired me to one day go back to Morrowind. And I did in 2020, with mods to bring the graphics up to date. Between 2020 and the present, I have done three or four 60+ hour playthroughs of Morrowind, still never beating it despite it now being one of my favorite games of all time. Morrowind is the best video game that I've seen that depicts the challenges and nuances of being a foreigner in a strange land, which I don't know if I've seen in another video game.

I really enjoyed this new show and am looking forward to more in the future!

I'm not the biggest pinball fan, but I have been to Silver Ball Planet in Osaka, and we have a pretty good pinball scene here in Portland.

Also, this episode was a lot of fun! I do really like your weekly columns, but this is a nice way to sum up the month and another fun thing to look forward to!

Love the new format.

This Week holds a special place in my... week because I always save it for when I can grab a quick 15 minute burst of uninterrupted podcast time, plus I always liked that they tended to be chosen with some personal importance to Diamond's past. Still, the new podcast is fun; coming straight off of Sonic Frontiers feels like tuning in to another episode of the Diamond 'n' Stu Show.

Love Diamond and love Stu. This is great!

J.P. McD.

Loved Stu’s comment about LucasArts being not funny. I cringed my way through a Monkey Island 1 replay in 2020. A strong point in MI2’s favor is frankly that it stopped trying so hard at humor and streamlined dialogue rather than slipping in “jokes”

listener feedback: i love this new type of episode

Stu, stand up for yourself. You don't have to be afraid of Henry. We will defend you!!! (This is a joke, I love Henry)

Enjoyed the episode. It's bologna that if you have the physical version of Rare Replay you don't get Goldeneye! The game I can't seem to finish is ANY Monster Hunter. Started with Tri, couldn't get into it. World was better. Arise better still. Regardless I inevitably fall off. I think my main issue is the monsters running off once you're fighting them. It's so tedious to chase after them. I want to like the games, but I don't understand why people think that's fun.

Breakers is great, and the collection is really well done. Yes, it is an obvious Street Fighter rip-off, but it's a very well done and entertaining Street Fighter rip-off.

Grant Baxter

To me, the game I have started up many times and just can never bring myself to finish is Mass Effect. I think the idea of your save game and choices carrying over throughout an entire trilogy of games is incredible, and I like the universe and dialogue/choice driven stuff a lot, but the actual action gameplay is a complete slog to me and just feels like I'm forcing myself to play through generic third-person shooter sections. If the Mass Effect games had the shooting removed completely and were just story-driven adventure games, I think I'd love them, but the action sections are so long and prominent I just can't get through it.

Loved the episode and definitely looking forward to more each month!

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

Really nice to have a regular "not quite mailbag" episode, and to get to hear the hosts just blabbing about stuff casually!

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

Oh and this month's question - Super Metroid should be my favourite SNES game, I know it's atmospheric as hell, sprawling, challenging and all around excellent. It's a shame I played the first hour of it a dozen times on an emulator in high school computer class back in the early noughties. I just overdosed on the early game piecemeal and have never been able to enjoy my way into the real meat of the game!

Nuno Amaral

Bloodborne is that game for me. I've tried to play it 3 or 4 times and it just never resonated with me. I want to like it and I'm sure I'm just missing something, but to me it just feels like circle strafe the game.

Fun episode, Stu & Diamond are great together

A game that has been impenetrable for me my whole life is Blackthorne. In all its grimy, '90s grunge comic book aesthetic glory. I've never been very good at cinematic platformers, but I always had a deep respect for them. And Blackthorne is no exception. But it's the only game in the genre I picked back up as an adult, and even today, I find it a chore to make it through. I want to love the game, and I want to finish it. But it's just such a slow, punishing game that I find myself getting sick of it quickly. I actually made it further as a kid than I have as an adult.

Pay per view of Henry and Stu beefing in the moonlight can have all my money.

Coming to this late and thank you for mention the Simon's Quest fan remake! I keep thinking I should replay that game lately and had no idea the remake existed.
