Apologies in advance, dear listeners: I (Diamond Feit) came down with a summer cold this week and while my health has improved much in the days that followed, during the actual recording of our monthly community podcast, I was still pretty exhausted and a little bit hoarse. Fear not though, for Stuart Gipp and I upheld our promise to you and read your comments, your feedback, and delivered a rundown of recent retro news & releases...and very old Canadian television for some reason.

Ironically, some of the info we caught up with this month is now out of date again thanks to the Nintendo Direct that followed our recording session by a few days. I guess we'll find time to react to Super Mario Wonderworld in our July episode, by which point Nintendo will probably announce something else new and exciting. Oh well!

Don't forget to leave your answers to our latest community question in the comments below.

Thanks for the episode. I hope you are feeling better, Diamond. My silliest playground gaming arguments were about which consoles were better in each generation. I was definitely a Sega fanboy at the time and took the side of Mega Drive/Genesis against SNES, although I ended up also buying an SNES a few years later; in the present, I don't think I could pick a favorite among the two. I was also an early proponent of the Sega Saturn against the PlayStation and Nintendo 64, although time has demonstrated that I was dead wrong.

Multiplayer Dungeon

I've never considered "boomer shooter" to mean the generation, but the bombasticity of the games. I feel like the term was coined before everyone started saying "boomer" derisively, but maybe I'm wrong. The name of the subgenre is certainly not derisive.

Did not realize I made a typo in my post last month. It was 2018 not 2008. As for my answer for this month's question, I was usually the only one to properly notice boss patterns in my friend group. I was often able to give them the proper strategy for the fights but we would yell at each other over my insistence that I was right. I think Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse got particularly heated in that regard

In 8th grade I gave an official, graded presentation on why N64 was better than Playstation. I had video examples and everything. I rented Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey 98 for each console to compare. (My younger brother got a Playstation for his birthday) My basic arguments were that load times suck and that N64 had better graphics. I don't remember what I got on the presentation.

I must say I'm happy Stu brought up "getting baseball" as a fellow sports agnostic. I went to my first real ball game in Korea a few months ago. My friend explained some rules as we drove there. Didn't matter. You can pay as much or as little attention as you want. You can mill around the stadium. Buy premium junk food. Feel bad for some insanely overqualified and overworked cheer teams. Shout when everyone else shouts because something good apparently happened. It's like watching an action movie but you can walk around it and see different angles. Good fun, will do again.

I grew up with baseball (along with hockey) and I appreciate the convo about the baseball experience. It’s more than the game. It’s hard to beat a nice sunny day at a ballgame. My uncle used to have Sunday season tickets and day trips to the Bronx were a big part of my life. A shout out to whoever put the Jim Abbott clip in (I’m sure it was Diamond), one of my earliest memories as a Yankee fan.

Also for Stu - Check out the World Series Baseball series (Greatest Nine in Japan I believe) for Saturn if you want a banger of a retro baseball game.

Bum Bum Song at the end totally took me back

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

THANKYOU Diamond for pointing out the age bracket boomer shooter mismatch, the term drives me wild because of that. My boomer old man was nearly FOURTY when Doom etc was being released! It only gets used because boomer shooter flows more as a phrase than GenX shooter!

Wow, two of my comments. I'd better start writing some good ones ;)

Stu should absolutely hit up a baseball game. Don't skip the minor league, tickets are cheap and sometimes free, stadiums are smaller, crowds more casual. Great hang.

DIAMOND! You got my name right (on the third try, lol). Even my HS French teacher biffed it on the first try.

My answer to this month’s question: I clearly remember debates among my friends about whether Final Fantasy 3 (or 6, I guess we call it now) or Final Fantasy 7 was better. I was a lone voice in my crowd who dared suggest that FF7 covered up a bland story with pretty-for-the-time graphics, while FF6’s story was a masterpiece and its pixel art was nearly unmatched on 16-bit consoles. Sometimes these debates got heated, which I’ll admit was probably my fault. I could never understand why my friends liked flashy graphics over substance. I’ve come around on FF7 in recent years, but it still can’t hold a candle to FF6. I’m still holding out hope that Squeenix will do a proper FF6 remake in the future.

I enjoy listening to these episodes! Any chance we could also get a list of the games you both discussed in the posts (optionally with links to purchase, maybe you all can get some referral income 😏)? It’s sometimes hard to hear/remember what games you have both been playing.

Q: What did you argue about on the playground? Most of those arguments for us, centered around the rumor mill in a pre-broadband internet era. N64 Zelda: OoT seemed to be the most heated topic. Describing blurry AOL screenshots we'd seen ahead of the release of finding a piece of the triforce in the kokiri village shop etc, but the most heated disagreements were around N64 DD and Zelda Gaiden. Revitalizing previous rumors of cut content, and false promises of a developing world, in realtime or the device releasing in the west, in general. Plus every kid group has that one kid who says their brother already has/had it, beat it, etc. The middle-school version of "my uncle works for Nintendo"

As a teenager working in the Target (and later Best Buy) electronics/media departments, it was annoying to regularly have ignorant people make claims that console competitors could play their respective games as well. I don't know how many times I heard someone's Xbox could play PS2 games and vice versa.

Hard agree with Stuart that both Curse of the Moon games eclipse Ritual of the Night. Does the vertical shmup section of Curse of the Moon 2 qualify as a "boomer shooter"?
