As the past decade of Five Nights at Freddy's has taught us, kids love horror. But before all the kiddos out there had the opportunity to look up the most stomach-churning images and videos in creation just by picking up mommy's cell phone, one question arose: How do you sell highly inappropriate media to children? On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Gary Butterfield, Dr. Sparkle, and Diamond Feit as the crew explores the best and worst of NES horror games to determine just how blood and guts sold in an era of Satanic Panic and Family Values.

What a wonderful mashup of worlds! Killer panel. I'm always down for a Duckfeed guest but mixing in some Dr.Sparkle is the absolute icing on the cake 🍰

I was surprised that I *did* recognize “ghoul school”. Before the days of gamefaqs and Wikipedia allowing you to read up on games you’ll never play, I had a book called “how to beat Nintendo games” which has tips and tricks for about 100 or so games. I read this back to back many times as a child. That was the only other time I ever saw anything about the game “ghoul school” before it was brought up here. Great episode!!

Re: the Elephant Man skeleton in Dr. Chaos, I knew an Elephant Man movie came out in the 1980s, but wasn't sure if it was big in Japan. Apparently it was the second biggest foreign film in Japan the year of its release?! It made 2.5 billion yen, second only to The Empire Strikes Back.

Always love it when Dr. Sparkle is on the show.

Anyone frightened by Kings Quest 6? Those dark catacombs, and descending into Hell?! I remember being a bit uneasy about how 'real' that game felt at the time. The campy voice acting softened the heavy situations.

Dave Dalrymple

I always love it when we can get a round-up of games that wouldn't normally make it on the podcast.

Good stuff, I will say one game that has freaked me out for years is Splatterhouse 3, not because of the actual gameplay, but that was the one that had those creepy cutscenes that would play if you didn’t finish a level fast enough, and that image of your wife as a mindless beast legit made me stop playing. It’s why I’m afraid to play Alien Isolation frankly!

Monster Party was a nice mix of horror, humor, and confusion. Glad the "deep fried shrimp" boss got a mention. What was up with that anyway?

Speaking of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, AVGN just posted a follow up to that episode.
