We love anniversaries here on Retronauts and we love movies, so I (Diamond Feit) couldn't resist podcasting about both this Halloween as a formative film celebrates 55 years of frights: Night of the Living Dead. Writer/director George A. Romero gave us one for the ages with his debut feature film, delivering plenty of scares and defining the "zombie" as we know it, permanently altering the landscape of horror.

Helping me break down this landmark motion picture and its impact on movies, video games, and the American psyche are returning experts James Eldred of Cinema Oblivia and artist Bill Mudron. Both James and Bill also share a personal connection with the city of Pittsburgh, Romero's base of operations, and frankly I needed guests on this episode who know how to use words like "yinz."

Reminder: if you've never seen Night of the Living Dead, you should rectify that right away! Its public domain status means it's freely available on YouTube, the Internet Archive, or any site willing to host it. The Wikipedia article about the movie includes the entire movie, how often does that happen??

Closing - The Misfits: "Night of the Living Dead"

I lived in Squirrel Hill in the 2000s. Wonder if I ever ran into James or Bill.

Incredibly funny how right as I thought "does he have a Pittsburgh accent?" James confirmed that it is actually something completely different. Which explains why he sounds so similar to like two or three people I went to high school with, none of whom were from Pittsburgh.

Gayest Episode Ever

Really enjoying this episode! And I have a comment that is sort of tangential but here I go. So the discussion of yinz brings up a interesting subject that is relevant to modern pronoun discussions, where English lacks a proper plural of you that most other languages have. The old singular you was thou. You used to be the plural. But then the plural also became the singular (it’s complicated) and our language is just deficient in this aspect now — except that we have regional plurals like yinz and y’all and youse, and all of them are trying to fix the thing that missing in basic English but for some reason we act like they’re bad? Like, people often look down on these plural words as being low or common and then insist on using you for both, even though it can be confusing. Sometimes it is helpful to be able to distinguishing between second person singular and second person plural like every other language. My point, I guess, is that we should admire the simple beauty of yinz.

I'd be surprised if one of the conservative people making a zombie movie hasn't had the "woke" people be killed because they wanted to treat the dead as people still. Also between yinz and jawn, PA has a lot of good words for these things.

Love this episode! I came into the Dead trilogy (Night, Dawn, Day) late as I was a big scaredy cat as a kid, but a huge horror fan as an adult. I’m surprised there wasn’t much mention of the Walking Dead comic and tv series as an influence. I only remember someone mentioning that they don’t call the walkers zombies. If there was anything that caused a zombie resurgence it was that.

Shrunken Shrine

Hey, this episode kicked unbelievable ass. Can we get more Bill and James when possible? James had a great podcast with Jeremy called Alexander's Ragtime Band, which I already miss. He and Bill have a great back and forth on some real deep film cuts, love it. The movie episodes of Retronauts usually to me feel like an extension of Talking Simpsons, but this feels like proper Retronauts. Would love to hear you guys with Bob and Henry, but maybe that has schedule clashes or something. Incidentally, if Bill's in Pittsburg, would that make you three the new 'Retronauts East'?

Totally forgot about that This Week in Retro on The Walking Dead! I think I was because it came out before this one. Thanks Diamond.

Another awesome episode, and thank you for introducing Cinema Oblivia to my rotation, this is absolutely “my shit”.
