Listeners, I (Diamond Feit) must apologize upfront for a major gaffe in this episode. Whether I was possessed by a fiendish jackal or exhausted from too much podcasting, I couldn't say, but for some reason I described the iconic one-off powerup from Super Mario Bros 3 as Lakitu's Shoe. Latiku has no shoes; I'm not even sure if he has legs!

Otherwise I'm quite proud of our latest community episode wherein Stuart Gipp and myself go over the latest releases, news, and your comments and feedback. Look forward to our thoughts on recent video game-themed anime, unfulfilled Kickstarter campaigns, and which circumstances are best for spelunking. Don't forget to answer our latest question in the comments below, and maybe share a picture if you can!

I have to agree with DF - while Tokyo was amazing, Osaka seemed more so and my wife and I both came to the same conclusion. Also looking forward to Stu’s next book: “All Food is Good”!

Ask not us for forgiveness but Kuribo. And may he have mercy. Also, Lakitu is playable on Mario Kart so we have to assume he has legs so can reach the car's pedals.

Craig

Hopefully the logistical fabric of Retronauts is not torn asunder from this shoe incident. Another fantastic episode as we wait patiently for the third incarnation of S3&K. 😎

Get a job? Are they serious? I didn’t realize at the time that a little piece of my childhood had slipped away. …forever.

I never dressed up as a game character exactly but I did a couple's costume with my boyfriend of characters from an anime based on a game. About 5 years ago I dressed as Ash and he dressed as Gary from Pokemon. I'm still trying to get him to cosplay again lol (maybe have him be Mario and I would be Bowser)

You can't beat Korone for retrogaming because she has the accent of a Japanese farmer grandma to match it. (It's a mix of Kansai and Tohoku.) 3D Land is a great game too, but personally I don't get what 3D Sonics even are. Why did Frontier put him in some kind of 3D scanned Scotland?

Stephen Maurer

I’m going as Charizard for Halloween! The costume is very comfortable and I look forward to putting it in my regular rotation. Also, kindly play Pizzicato Five in every episode moving forward, please and thank you.

My videogame costume was one of those weird costume ideas that barely cost any more and made me very happy. I went to a dollar store and bought a big white sheet of paper, and drew a fluffy cloud on it with a black sharpie. Then I took a bamboo stick and a stuffed 1-up mushroom. A little bit of string and tape later, and I was dressed as fishing Lakitu from the old Mario games

Thank you for reading my comment, Stuart; I wasn't sure if you would. And thank you for being such a good sport about it. :)

Typical adventure game slander in this episode, even from Stu who likes Sierra! There’s no adventure game on earth where you could get stuck and then have to play “60 hours” to restart (as a letter writer said). A Boy and His Blob is like a 12 minute game, and most of the classics are probably less than 2 hours with foreknowledge. This would be like complaining about dying in world 8-3 in SMB3 and then having to restart “all the way back at the beginning”. Boo hoo!

It's not strictly a video game costume, but I feel that this is close enough. A little context first: I am a musician, and one of my local venues hosts an annual Halloween Covers Show in which various groups get to dress up as their favorite bands and/or pop stars and play a short and lively 20 minute set of their best material. In 2018, my band decided to perform as Sex Bob-Omb, and as the bassist, the role of Scott Pilgrim naturally fell to me. We got dressed up and played all of the songs featured in the film to a largely disinterested audience, which in my mind only adds to the authenticity of our performance. Sadly, no Matthew Patel was available to interrupt our set, and at no point did we tear the roof off, but I did make sure to sip on Coke Zero in between songs. One of my favorite Halloweens ever.
