Wowie zowie! After the untold tyranny of 15 years of New Super Mario Bros. games, Nintendo's flagship series returned with a bang in the form of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This absolutely charming collection of 2D platforming ideas stunned the public last fall with its sheer abundance of variety, all executed to the standard of excellence we expect from a Mario game. But how did it all come together? And, most importantly, did we actually like it? On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Kevin Bunch, Stuart Gipp, and Henry Gilbert as the crew discusses the next evolution of the Super Mario series.

I can tell this is a well made game, but to some up my feelings about the game save me from the we marios they were too big for me!

As a Talking Simpsons fan, I love these crossover episodes featuring Henry!

The cat’s meow is the podcast’s wonder element 🐈

I'm sick of "simping" culture, but that artwork is great.

Agree with the idea that the talking flowers are a welcome use of commentary in the game. I tried French after a few levels to switch it up and it was delightful. Part of what makes this game work so well is the combination of elements you all discussed. It satisfies those who want a traditional, 2D Mario experience (à la SMB3 or SMWorld) while also bringing in the more psychedelic and experimental elements of something Yoshi's Island, but not making it a collect-a-thon. I ripped through it in a week as part of a library rental a month or so ago and this episode was a strong reminder of how fantastic this game is.

I wonder if I’m alone in acknowledging all the creativity and shared DNA with previous 2D Mario masterpieces… but feeling like, for some reason, it still just isn’t all that fun in the end. I can’t quite put my finger on why, other than to say that the Wonder Flowers are enjoyable but too contained and gimmicky for the whole game to be permeated with the great platforming and personality of SMW or Yoshi’s Island. It’s looking like I may be alone, or at least in a very small minority, with this opinion. [Goes to stand in corner.]

Loved just about every second of the game, loved this episode. You will never get me to not call Princess Daisy Princess Potato.

I agree with Stuart about the NSMB games, at least the console ones. The core Mario gameplay shines through in each game despite the bland presentation. NSMB Wii and U have some of the toughest levels in any 2D Mario game. I found myself wishing Mario Wonder presented more of a challenge in its later levels. Nevertheless I was charmed by the detailed animations and trippy Wonder effects. The characters' "Thank you" after completing a level always makes me smile.

I probably need to play more, but this hasn't clicked with me. Likely it's because I haven't been playing around with badges, out of a misplaced notion that I'm somehow cheating. It'd probably be more fun with online people, too

I initially didn't like that they made the core cast play the same, but I ended up really loving the badge system. If you want Luigi to play like SMB2, they got a badge for that, etc. Honestly, this is the first Mario game since SMW that really grabbed me and gave that feeling that the classic ones did, and honestly I never thought it my 40s a game could do that again, but sure enough, Wonder had me feeling like a 10 year old playing SMB3 for the first time with how much creativity was jammed in there.
