Diamond Feit here, happy holidays everyone! Here it is listeners, our last community podcast of 2023. It's also our longest (by far) and it's our first to feature not one but TWO guests: regular cohort Stuart Gipp and, for the first time, Retronauts' longtime editor Greg Leahy! We've been thanking Greg in text form for years at the bottom of these posts but this month I wanted to thank him in person. I couldn't do that since he lives in another country, but I could invite him onto the show and he accepted.

Before you press play on this month's bonus show, please prepare yourself for twice the Britishness, graphic tales of Stu killing children, and one simple tip for improving your mental health. Naturally, we end the show with a question for you to answer, but since this is the end of the calendar year, I bet you can guess what the question is without opening the podcast (but please do, it took me many hours to edit this).

My GOTY for 2023 is (surprise, surprise) Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. An absolutely fantastic followup to Breath of the Wild. That's not much more I can say about it that hasn't already been said better by someone else. My GOTY that's not from 2023 is Disco Elysium. It's not often I can say a game felt like a wholly unique experience but that describes Disco Elysium thanks to the excellent writing, unique mechanics, and fascinating world. Anyone who asks me what games I've been playing gets an earful about all the different ways Disco Elysium blew me away.

My GOTY from this year is Pikmin 4 (I loved it even more than Mario Wonder and TOTK personally, which are also masterpieces to me) and it's just Pikmin perfected that is constantly mixing things up, introducing new elements and mechanics, and combines all the unqiue mechanics like treasure hunting that had only been in Pikmin 2 prior into one seamless experience. As for a retro game I played for the first time as my GOTY, I finally played The World Ends With You for the first time and it became one of my favorite games of all-time. The battle system was creative and an absolute blast, and it's an experience that could only be done with the DS's unique feature sets. I imagine the mobile and Switch ports lose that experience. It really makes you feel immersed in Shibuya, has one of my favorite soundtracks ever, and is maybe the most "stylish" game I've ever played. Thanks so much for doing these community podcasts all year! They've been such a treat to look forward to every month!

Gold Peter? Simpsons did it!

Loved hearing from Greg who is never allowed to be self deprecating AND British again. Also my GNC howled at Diamond's "for the straights" line. In the macro,. I really love getting more time with new hosts this year - Diamond, Stu, Nadia, and Jess have done a great job at spicing things up, and I look forward to the more diverse voices in the new year.

I have said it before but I really do feel you are spoiling is with this monthly bonus episode. I can’t be the only one who wishes there were a 10$ level so I could give a little more back. Thank you Diamond and Stuart for the excellent monthly episodes (and weekly columns of course), looking forward to more in 2024.

Please have Greg Leahy on again. I always enjoy what he adds to the conversation.

My game of the year by hours played is Splatoon 3, by game that actually came out this year is Tears of the Kingdom, by game that I played the third most of despite it coming out three years ago is Omori.

Chris (not Benoit)

Thank you for not butchering my name DF, you got it right! I did have a morbid laugh at the Chris Benoit reference though

Great podcast, thanks for the great discussions in 2023 and I'm looking forward to more in 2024. Favorite 2023 game: I only played one but, given that I already have over 50 hours on it, I feel confident that it'd be high on my list in any year: F-Zero 99. Challenging, addictive and a very interesting set of changes and additions in the three months it's been live: Favorite pre-2023 game: Metroid Dread. True to the Metroid experience, for how it challenged me to find a way through its alien world and how its refined gameplay and thriller story beats are firmly rooted in Samus' character. Worth the wait. Runners-up: Breath of the Wild, which I haven't finished and picked up the last few weeks. It's gonna be my project for the start of 2024. Burnout Paradise Remastered. What can I say, I love a fast and intense racing game.

Wood Duck [Legacy Edition]

I can't believe I actually *tricked you* into playing 1960s southern Baptist emo music! (seriously, as much as I love some of that stuff so much of it is "you'll always be mine no matter your opinion on the subject" or "I'm gonna die I'm so heartbroken and 18 years old") Greg was fantastic, he's Stuart Lite for those of us with bad reflux! Loved Stuarts unexpected opinion torpedo attacks coming out of nowhere, always funny. Being a PC gamer mostly, my year was spent playing either old games with great new content/patches or mods, or smaller indie stuff, or stuff from past years I'd bought but not played yet! The only two big names I can think of playing this year was Zelda and Mario Wonder, both of which I have issues with and would *only* rate a lowly 8/10! With that being said, I choose Mario Wonder for being a really nice aesthetic refresh of 2D Mario, I really hope they can keep the freshness and bring it to some games with more expansive levels and gameplay. Wait hang on, I'll also put forward a "game of any year" - Dome Keeper on PC from 2022. A little ripper of a roguelite where you balance mining and exploring for resources with upgrading your dome and fending off indescribable cosmic horrors, all wrapped up with gorgeous pixely aesthetics. A really well presented gem that the devs keep on adding to!

My GOTY for 2023 was Super Mario RPG remake. Good QoL changes and an amazing soundtrack helps to improve on one of my favorite games of all time. My GOTY not from 2023 is Final Fantasy IV (in pixel remastered form). Finally finished it after first playing the SNES version 27/28 years ago.

Tall Rob

Always grateful to have these comments acknowledged and I was especially glad for the cut-and-paste error that led Diamond to reference the SNL sketch with Johnny Five-times. I missed that one when it aired and it was great to watch it after finishing the episode. Game of 2023 was Tears of the Kingdom and game of not 2023 was Dragon Warrior III, with Curse of the Moon as a close second.

Phoequinox

I mostly play older games, with the occasional newer release peppered in to keep things fresh. In 2023, I only played one game from that same year, and it was Star Ocean: Second Story R, which is a remake. If that counts, it's my favorite game by default. And I'm happy with that, because it's a great game and an even better remake. My favorite game before 2023, back a whole year, was Elden Ring. Every bit as excellent as its reputation suggests.

Shrunken Shrine

Huge thanks again for the shoutout about my writing! It means a lot. My 2023 GOTY is Octopath Traveler II, a refinement of the first in such minor, broad yet key strokes that it turned what seemed like another of Square's modern FF5 throwbacks into what looks to be one of its most promising franchises yet. My non-2023 GOTY would be Portal - only finally got around to it thanks to your episode. Everything I want from a game: a well-excuted concept that only a videogame can offer, the masterful difficulty curve that constantly makes you feel like you're a genius, and most importantly, is 3 hours long. I'm only kind of joking.
